Game One Goes 14 Innings

The BU Eagles and APU Cougars battled it out in a long 14 inning game which resulted in a 5-4 Eagles loss.

LA MIRADA --- Game one of the non-conference doubleheader on Saturday carried on through 14 innings as the Cougars (6-6) and Eagles (3-7) were tied at four each for five innings. APU was the team to pull ahead in the 14th inning to take a win at Eagles Diamond.

After a tough first two games against the Cougars on Friday, the Eagles took some time to get their heads back in the game on day two. The first two batters that Andrew Beauvais faced reached base on errors, followed by two ground outs to advance runners and get a run on the board for the Cougars in the first inning.

The Eagles were ready to answer back. Tyler White started off the bottom of the first inning by reaching base on an error and then ended up in scoring position due to a second error from APU. AJ Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in his base runner and tie up the game at one.

The Cougars' first baseman made up for his previous error by hitting a solo shot just over the right field fence to regain a Cougars lead in the second inning (2-1).

Beauvais pitched a quick 1-2-3 third inning which got the Eagles fired up and ready to go in the bottom of the inning. The bottom of the Eagles lineup started a rally with a single from Gavin Ayers and a double from Noah Ruiz. With two runners in scoring position, White came in and cleared the bases with a three-run shot to dead center field. The Eagles took a 4-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Beauvais looked great on the mound despite the two runs at the beginning of the game as he followed up with five hitless innings to keep the score at 4-2 when he exited the game in the eighth inning.

With just three outs left and at least two runs to keep APU in the game, they came up to the plate and tied the game with a two-run home run. While the Cougars attempted to take a lead, they were not able to do so and ended the top of the ninth inning with a 4-4 tie.

Austin Carillo started off the ninth inning with a hard hit ball to the center field fence which looked like it went over the fence, but it ended up bouncing back and being a single. The Eagles went on to load the bases, but could not produce any runs.

The Cornerstone Cup rivals headed into extra innings tied at four. Both teams were able to get men on base but it was not enough to bring in a run until the 14th inning.

In the top of the 14th inning, a walk would get the winning run on base for APU. An RBI double followed, giving the Cougars a 5-4 lead. The Eagles did everything they could to pick up a well-deserved win over Azusa Pacific, but unfortunately could not come up with a run to respond.

In Beauvais' 7.1 innings pitched in game one, he gave up just one earned run, five hits, zero walks, and reached a season-high of six strikeouts. After Zittel came in to relieve Beauvais, BU turned to Gilbert Lopez who did his job and pitched a scoreless three innings, striking out four Cougars. The Eagles then put their trust in Cazel who struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 12th inning. Cazel went on to add another scoreless inning in the 13th.

The Eagles and Cougars will face off for the final game of the Cornerstone Cup series in the late afternoon.
