BU Wins Behind Ayers

The Eagles tallied three home runs with the help of Gavin Ayers to pick up a 10-5 victory over the Cougars in the final game of the Cornerstone Cup Series.

LA MIRADA --- Home runs were important for both teams at Eagles Diamond in the short five inning game on Saturday afternoon. APU (6-7) was hoping for a sweep, but the Eagles (4-7) struck back with a big 10-5 win.

A scoreless first inning meant someone needed to step up to the plate and APU was the team to do it. A two-run home run over the left center field fence gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles started off the bottom of the second inning being gifted three baserunners for a bases loaded opportunity. Noah Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in a runner and cut APU's lead to 2-1. Gavin Ayers took the Cougars yard for a three-run home run to take a 4-2 Eagles lead.

Azusa Pacific tacked on another run in both the third and fourth innings, thanks to a few productive walks and base hits. The Cougars were unable to find a rally long enough to get their lead back, but they were back in the game with a 4-4 tie.

BU was tired of tie games and they wanted nothing but a comfortable lead over APU. With runners on first and second and two outs, the Eagles would look to Ayers once again. The junior did not disappoint, launching another three-run bomb to left center field. Once again, Ayers put the Eagles in front at 7-4.

The Cougars answered back with a solo shot in the top of the fifth inning, but again, they were unable to take a lead (7-5).

As the daylight faded, Austin Carillo got things moving in the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Andrew Lujan wanted to hop on the home run train and he did just that by hitting a two-run shot on the first pitch he saw. Ayers, who was already having himself a memorable game, hit a single to left field, stole second base, reached third on an error and ended up bringing in another insurance run on a wild pitch. After five innings, the Eagles led 10-5.

Because of a long first game, Eagles Diamond ran out of daylight and the game, which was scheduled for seven innings, had to be called after five innings, giving Biola the win.

Although it was only a five inning game, Ayers had a huge offensive outing. He went 3-3 against the Cougars with three runs, six RBIs and two home runs. Ayers now leads the Eagles with a 1.000 slugging percentage on the season. Lujan also had a big day in the batters box as he went 1-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run.

Bobby Brown and Chris McClean's work on the mound led to McClean picking up his first win of his career.

The Eagles will be back in action at Eagles Diamond on Tuesday, February 21 at 1:00 pm when they take on Cal Poly Pomona.
