Ticket Punched

The women’s basketball team punched their ticket to the PacWest Championships with their 69-65 victory over Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif.--- The Biola Women's Basketball team earned their ticket to the PacWest Championships with a 69-65 win over Concordia.

Biola knew that they had to win this game or wait for Hawai'i Hilo to lose to secure their spot in the PacWest Championships and Eagles came together to take matters into their own hands.

BU's win over CUI makes them the sixth team in the six team conference tournament. Some of the final seedings are still up in the air, but the five other teams that will be traveling to Honolulu are Azusa Pacific, Concordia, Dominican, Hawai'i Pacific and Point Loma.

"Tonight was a big game for us," stated Jordan Rabe. "We talked before the game about punching our own ticket and not just sitting around and waiting for Hilo to lose for us and I'm really proud of our team because we did just that. Not to mention the fact that we now have beaten the number one and number two teams in the conference back-to-back. All in all this is a big win for us and gives us a lot of momentum moving forward into post season play and I'm really excited for what's to come!"

Biola (12-13, 10-7 PacWest) banded together to persevere through a close battle against Concordia (15-7, 12-4 PacWest).

The Eagles narrowly outscored the Golden Eagles 14-13 in the first quarter. Natasa Radovic scored the first basket and the Eagles held a modest lead over the Golden Eagles that they cut to a one-point differential by the end of the first quarter.

Concordia jumped ahead in the first 15 seconds of the second quarter, thanks to a foul committed by Biola that allowed CUI to score two points off of two good free throws (15-14). Aysia Johnson responded on the next possession with a basket that bumped the Eagles ahead, 16-15.

CUI came back again, this time with a three-pointer that placed them ahead 17-16. And Sydney Moran responded for Biola with a three-pointer of her own that nudged BU ahead, 19-18.

Biola battled to hold their lead heading into halftime, but the Golden Eagles would take it back in the final minutes and a CUI three-pointer would boost them ahead of BU, 33-31.

Returning from the break, Concordia stretched their lead by as much as seven points before Biola switched gears and went on to outscore CUI 11-2. Biola began cutting down Concordia's lead by scoring three consecutive baskets that put them within a point's reach of CUI, 43-42.

CUI broke up BU's scoring with a two-point basket that extended their lead 45-42, but Biola would score the final four baskets of the quarter that would put them ahead, 47-45.

Biola grew their lead to as much as eight points in the final frame before CUI would show some late fight, scoring two three-pointers that would make them within two points reach of BU with two seconds remaining (67-65).

The Eagles cut Concordia's momentum short by holding a strong front that would allow them to outlast CUI. Laila Walker drained two final free throws that would give them the 69-65 win.

Rabe and Walker led the Eagles scoring with 15 points. Johnson was the next highest scorer with 14 points.

Biola played sharp defense, where they only allowed eight turnovers to Concordia's 15. BU reaped the benefits, scoring 11 points off the home team's errors.

Biola plays next on Tuesday, Feb. 21 against Hawai'i Hilo. Come on out in red to support your Eagles against the Vulcans.
