Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Billi Derleth, Assistant Sports Information Director

Victorious Eagles

The women’s basketball team was victorious against Azusa Pacific, taking a 79-72 win at home.

LA MIRADA---The Biola Women's Basketball team balled out in an exciting 79-72 win over Azusa Pacific at Chase Gymnasium.

"What an exciting win versus a tough, poised Azusa Pacific team," stated head coach Alan Nakamura. "They deserve all of the credit they get. We had to compete for 40 minutes and our team really pulled together and played as one. We have had a challenging stretch, but our players kept the faith and unity. Tonight our team played tough and confidently for the full 40. I'm very thankful for them, and I am proud of the good work of our players and staff - everyone has a focus on giving what they have received."

The women's basketball team's win brings the Eagles up 60-30 in the Cornerstone Cup standings, 11-13 overall, 9-7 in the PacWest Conference, and sixth place in the PacWest standings.

Biola took down the PacWest's current first place team, Azusa Pacific (20-4 overall, 15-2 PacWest), and gave them their second loss of conference play.

Four Eagles scored in double digits in an all around great team win. Aysia Johnson led BU with 18 points, followed by Laila Walker with 17 points, Jordan Rabe with 12 points, and Natasa Radovic with 10 points.

"This is my favorite game out of my five years of Biola basketball because of the energy that we had in the game and how everyone was cheering for each other," reflected Johnson. "It was truly a team effort."

The Eagles brought the energy out the get-go, out-scoring APU 24-15 in the first quarter. Johnson led her team with seven points, followed by Rabe and Maya Whiteside with five points each, Walker with three points, and Radovic and Jessa Thurman with two points apiece.

APU regrouped and came back to outscore BU in the second quarter 19-17, but it wasn't enough to overcome Biola and the Eagles led 41-34 heading into the halftime break.

Returning from halftime, Biola came out stronger than ever where they pulled together to score 28 points while limiting APU to 18. The Eagles were electric beyond the arc, draining five baskets. Walker made two and Radovic, Thurman and Eleni Cabrera each had one.

Biola was up 17 points heading into the final frame, but the Cougars would make it interesting by scoring a game-high of 20 points. APU cut BU's lead to as much as seven points before the Eagles' eventual 79-72 victory.

BU had an impressive offensive performance where they shot 54 percent in the field, 43 percent beyond the arc and were a perfect 100 percent at the free throw line.

Five Eagles shot 500 percent or above including Johnson (8-11), Rabe (5-6), Radovic (4-6), Thurman (2-3), and Cabrera (1-2).

Walker led her team in three-pointers with five, followed by Johnson and Rabe who had two and four Eagles contributed one in a great team win.

The Eagles play next on Thursday, Feb. 16 against Concordia University Irvine at 5:30 p.m. at CU Arena.
