Digging Deep

The women’s basketball team dug deep in their exciting 70-66 victory over Dominican.

LA MIRADA—The Biola women's basketball team dug deep in their 70-66 victory over Dominican. Three Eagles scored in the double-digits which helped them prevail at Chase Gymnasium.

Kaylen Kamelamela shined with a season-high of 19 points and Jordan Rabe and Jaycee Goldsmith contributed 11 over the Penguins in an important conference win for Biola.

Kamelamela reflected, "Today my shot was there. I've been kinda dry all season but luckily I got it going before christmas break which feels good."

The Eagles set the tempo in the first quarter where they held sole possession of the lead, out-scoring Dominican 13-6.

Despite a great start, the second quarter proved favorable to the Penguins who would come back to out-score Biola 17-8. The lead was swapped three times between the teams, but the Penguins would hold the 23-21 lead heading into halftime.

The intensity ramped up in the third quarter where the game was tied up five times. Biola was trailing by a basket with 1:45 on the game clock, but would tie up the game in the next possession. Then the Eagles forced a Penguin turnover and took the 48-46 lead thanks to a layup by Laila Walker.

BU kept the lead, ending the third up by one over Dominican (50-49).

Neither team was able to get comfortable in the fourth quarter as the lead was exchanged four times between the two squads. Biola dug deep, out-scoring Dominican 20-17 which ended up translating to a 70-66 win for BU.

Biola's biggest lead in the fourth quarter was by six points with 11 seconds remaining in regulation that DU would cut down to three with six seconds left (69-66).
The Penguins were then forced to foul and Goldsmith would cash in, giving Biola the additional one-point cushion with her good free throw with four seconds left (70-66).

"This win was a hard-earned win for our team," stated head coach Alan Nakamura. "Dominican is a very well-coached, very athletic, very talented team - we have a lot of appreciation for them. We are blessed with a group of high character, intelligent, and talented young women. We really needed all of our toughness and unity to come out on top in this seesaw game. I'm very thankful for the great effort by our players and staff."

The Eagles improved their record to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the PacWest Conference while the Penguins fell 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Next up for Biola is Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
