Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rabe Stays Hot, Eagles Lose

Biola gets 14 points and a bunch of threes from Jordan Rabe, but falls short to Hilo.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Following 11 days without a game, basketball fans were treated to a great one inside Chase Gym as the Eagles of Biola played host to the Vulcans from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Aside from a few scoring streaks here and there, the game was close for nearly all 40 minutes. Hawaii Hilo used two second-half runs, including a strong fourth quarter to grab the win, 74-67.

There were eight lead changes throughout the contest, with the largest Biola lead being just two points (16-14 just before the end of Q1). The game was tied 16-16 after 10 minutes. Hilo pulled ahead by just two points at the halftime break by outscoring Biola 15-13 in the second period. Five three-point makes were critical in keeping the Eagles in the game during the first half. Biola shot just 37 percent through that first 20 minutes while Hilo was making shots at close to 50 percent.

With the lead in tow, the Vulcans opened up the second half on a huge run. They scored 11 of the first 15 points in the third period to extend to a nine-point lead, which was the largest of the game at that point.

Biola answered, though, as Jaycee Goldsmith and Jordan Rabe scored on back-to-back possessions to pull the Eagles back to just a 42-38 deficit. Hilo's Erica Ingram went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to break up the Biola scoring stretch, but then a Rabe three sparked six-consecutive points for BU to pull ahead 44-43. The one-point lead six minutes into the second half was Biola's first lead for coach Nakamura's squad since the first quarter.

Rabe was on fire from beyond the arc throughout the first 30 minutes of the game. The Eagles benefited from four Rabe three-point makes in this one, continuing a hot stretch for the grad student. In her last three outings Rabe's combined to make 12 three-pointers. That's more than her overall total of 11 threes through the first 10 games.

After the Eagles took that lead, Hilo immediately grabbed it back but the two sides traded buckets in a nail-biter until nearly the end of the third quarter. A Jeneice Harmon two-point make with 12 seconds left in the third made it 52-49 Hilo and kicked off a 11-0 run for the Vulcans that really sealed the game. Within that one minute, 55 second stretch Hawaii Hilo went 4-for-4 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point land, led by five points from Harmon.

When it finally shook off the rust Biola went on another scoring run of its own. The Eagles scored eight-straight, powered by triples from Laila Walker and Kaylen Kamelamela. That brought Biola back within four, making it a new ballgame with six minutes, 38 seconds to go.

Hilo did just enough over those final seven minutes to lock up the seven-point victory. Unfortunately for the Eagles, just two of their final eight field goal attempts went through the net.

Rabe was the Eagles' leading scorer with 14 points on a night where offense was hard to come by. The Eagles shot just 37 percent from the field and could not keep up with the Hilo side's 48 percent effort. The visiting Vulcans were really carried by an impressive 9-for-11 effort from Keirstyn Agonias. Agonias came into the night averaging 12 points-per-game, but she dropped 22 on the Eagles.

Both teams made nine threes and Biola was a steady 16-for-20 on free-throw attempts, going to the line six more times than UHH. Fourteen turnovers and cold three-point shooting in the second and fourth quarters made it tough for BU to close the gap.

Hawaii Hilo improved to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in league play while Biola falls to 7-6 and 3-2 in the PacWest. The Eagles will look to bounce back on Monday as they host Chaminade in a New Year's Day nightcap (5:30 p.m.).
