December 01, 2023

ORANGE, Calif. --- The Eagles continued their winter slate with the opening 14 events of the Chapman Invite on Friday. Six event crowns and a pool record highlighted the day, as Chapman, Concordia, and Biola battled in the pool.

The day started with diving and Lorelai Carney opened with a win on the 3M board. Carney posted a score of 445.75 and was followed by teammates Abby DePina and Eliana Cote in third and fourth place, respectively.

The first leg of the first swimming race saw a pool record fall. Nathan Griffin claimed the Chapman pool record with his 100 backstroke split of 50.48 in the 400 medley relay. The group took second as a whole to kick off the day. The women came up next and stole the show with a top finish. Allison Yancey, Meghan Tolman, Morgan Kampfer and Rachel Munch joined forces for a time of 3:54.59, winning by three seconds.

Noah Hall delivered next for BU, capturing the win in the 500 free. The long distance race belonged to the Eagles, who claimed the top four spots. Hall touched at 4:43.04 and was followed by Sean Rho at 4:47.72, Jacob Haaksma at 4:49.13, and Michael Maurer at 4:52.25.

Sofia Chavez-Varela and Karter McNutt teamed up to sweep the 200 IM events between the women and men. Chavez-Varela crushed the competition in first place with a time of 2:11.85 and McNutt touched at 1:58.35 in the top spot. Gavin Souttere was not far behind, claiming third with a sub-two minute mark.

The final event crown went to Katie Ottman in the 50 free. The senior offered a time of 24.30 and barely out-touched her teammate in Yancey, who took second at 24.45.

Biola will return to the pool on Saturday and wrap up the Chapman Invite with the final events.
