Eagles Outpaced by Vikings

The women’s basketball team was outpaced in their 70-54 loss to Western Washington, but continue to learn and grow heading into conference play.

BELLINGHAM, Wash.---The Biola women's basketball team was outpaced in their 70-54 loss to Western Washington, but continue to learn and grow heading into conference play.

Both teams shot around 37 percent from the field, but extra opportunities given to Western Washington due to Biola turnovers would end up making the difference. BU only made five more turnovers compared to WWU (19-14), but the Vikings capitalized on the Eagles' errors where they out-scored Biola 19-7.

The Eagles scored the first basket of the game, but the Vikings would match it in the next possession and go on to out-score BU 19-14 in the first frame.

Western Washington held the lead in the second quarter which they built up to as much as 13 points. Biola worked to cut it down to just seven entering the half time break. Laila Walker made the three before halftime, 30-23.

Both squads put up scoring highs in the third quarter, but WWU would manage to out-score Biola 21-16 which translated to a 12-point Western Washington lead at the end of the third (51-39). Jordan Rabe led the Eagles offensive effort with seven points.

The Eagles struggled to catch up to the Vikings in the fourth quarter and the home team would close out the game strong, managing to out-score Biola 19-15. WWU's Brooke Walling was a force to be reckoned with, leading Western Washington in scoring in the final frame and the game where she led the floor with 22 points.

Kaylen Kamelamela played 16 minutes against the Vikings, recording three points, two steals, and one rebound. When asked about this weekend, she reflected, "I think this weekend we got a good look at how resilient our team is and found our groove on both ends of the court. Offensively, we're no longer relying on the 3-point game and are a dual threat by getting points both in and out of the paint."

Kamelamela continued, "I trust my team and have full faith that we'll get it going in time for conference play. Defensively, our rotations and intensity have elevated our ability to get some stops. We just need to do better with converting on the other end of the court and control the momentum of the game. Overall, this was a very valuable trip for us and the upcoming season looks promising if we continue to build off of this!"

Biola plays next on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. where they open conference play against CUI at Chase Gymnasium.
