November 18, 2023

LA VERNE, Calif. --- The La Verne Winter Invite began on Friday, as a group of 15 schools took to Las Flores Park. Biola jumped in and made a splash with a trio of podium finishes. Allison Yancey and Nathan Griffin highlighted the day with school records in the 100 backstroke.

Yancey was the opening leg of the 400 medley relay for Biola and helped the team to a bronze placement in the event. She passed the baton to the next swimmer in 56.87, which set the new school record for the 100 backstroke. Meghan Tolman, Morgan Kampfer, and Phoebe Munholland carried the rest of the relay for a total time of 3:53.56.

Griffin did the same for the men, leading off the 400 medley with a school-record time. The sophomore touched in 50.49 for his 100 backstroke leg. The strong pace helped the Eagles grab seventh as a relay.

The Eagles thrived in the 200 individual medley with a pair of men and women landing in the top 10. The BU women placed two on the podium, beginning with Rachel Munch. The freshman touched at 2:05.83 in the finals, trailing the first place finisher by just .5 seconds. Yancey was not far behind, nabbing third place at 2:06.54 amidst the competition of 83 participants in the event.

On the men's side, Jacob Haaksma delivered a fifth place showing in the 200 IM. Haaksma touched at 1:53.81 and was followed by teammate Sean Rho in seventh place at 1:56.16.

Alejandro Marchesini made the 500 finals with an eighth place showing in the preliminaries. He stepped up in the top finals heat with a time of 4:39.53 for fifth place.

Day two will open with prelims at 9:00 am on Saturday, when the Eagles return to action.
