Cruising Through

Biola picked up a win in the opening round of the WWPA Tournament, defeating Mercyhurst.

O'FALLON, Ill. --- Biola advanced in the WWPA Championships with a comfortable victory on Friday afternoon. The No. 1 seeded Eagles took care of business in a 25-6 rout over the fourth-seeded Mercyhurst Lakers.

For the second time, the BU squad earned a first round win and has made the WWPA Championship Semifinals. The 19-point victory matched a season-best for the team in 2023.

BU was in control from the start, scoring five of the first six goals of the contest. Biola never stopped pushing the pace, putting together its best run in the third quarter with a 7-0 rally. In the third period, the Eagles outscored the Lakers, 9-1, ballooning their advantage to 20-6.

The Eagles did not let up on the gas, finishing out the game with stellar defense. Mercyhurst went scoreless in the final quarter, while BU struck five times.

Caleb Hernandez lit up the stat sheet with an astounding nine points on Friday. The attacker found the back of the net four times, while also dishing out five assists and a steal.

Roman Saroyan lengthened his streak of games with a goal to 15, tallying a team-high of five. The freshman spread out his scoring with at least one goal in each quarter, including two in the fourth.

Mitchell Carpenter picked up the win in the cage for the Eagles. Carpenter nabbed 10 saves, while logging all 32 minutes in goal.

Eight Eagles tallied multiple goals, including Hernandez, Saroyan, Maxwell Osborn (4), Nolan Rapp (2), John Grasso (2), Will Tibbetts (2), Joshua Halopoff (2), and Nick Murray (2). The flurry of scores helped the team to its highest goal count in the season.

Biola will now turn its attention to the hosting school in McKendree, as the two teams meet in the WWPA Championships Semifinals on Saturday at 11:00 am PT.
