Two Down, One to Go

Biola picked up a WWPA Semifinals victory on Saturday and advanced to the championship match.

O'FALLON, Ill. --- Game two of the WWPA Championship Tournament for the Eagles was a battle with the host squad McKendree. The top seed in the west in Biola took care of business against the No. 2 seed from the east, winning with a 15-12 margin of victory.

Saturday's triumph for the Eagles put the team through to the WWPA Championship game set for Sunday. BU faces #2W Concordia in the 10:00 am PT bout at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

In their semifinals matchup against the Bearcats, Biola got off to another hot start. The Eagles scored on back-to-back possessions two minutes into the first quarter and at four minutes into the first.

The onslaught continued for an astounding seven goals in the opening quarter for BU. Roman Saroyan scored three times in the stanza to help the Eagles to a 7-2 advantage after eight minutes of play.

The second period was much more even with the two teams splitting the quarter, 4-4.

Following the halftime break, McKendree pushed back and made a game of the matchup. After trading goals early in the third, the Bearcats piled on three unanswered between the last three minutes of the third and the first two minutes of the fourth. BU went scoreless for nine minutes of game time, while its lead sank to two.

The BU offense responded by drawing a pair of five-meter penalties late in the contest to keep the game out of reach. Caleb Hernandez and Joshua Halopoff tacked on the insurance scores, to secure the 15-12 finish in Biola's favor.

Halopoff had himself a day with four goals on six shots. The goal total matched his season-best, continuing his tear of four-straight games with multiple goals and 10 goals in that four game stretch.

"What's really pushing me is the team," said Joshua Halopoff after his standout performance. "It's all of us together, banding together, as a group of brothers."

The group of brothers took advantage of the 10 McKendree exclusions on Saturday, cashing in on two power plays and three five-meter penalty shots.

Maxwell Osborn added to his strong tournament, landing two goals with two assists. Hernandez matched him with four points as well, hitting three goals while dishing out one assist.

Saroyan matched Halopoff with four goals on the day but added an assist for five points. The freshman also nabbed a sprint win, as the Eagles won three-of-four sprints.

The WWPA Championship game is next up for the Eagles, as they face #2W Concordia on Sunday at 10:00 am PT.
