IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola men's soccer team had three athletes honored on the 2023 All-PacWest Men's Soccer teams.
Luca McGreevey Couchman earned PacWest Freshman of the Year and was a Second Team All-PacWest pick.
The true Freshman led Biola with eight goals which ranked him the fourth-highest scorer in the conference. A season-high for McGreevey Couchman was when he had a hat trick in Biola's 3-3 draw against HPU. Additionally, two of his eight goals were game-winners.Â
He also ended the year with 16 points which was fifth-best in the PacWest.Â
"Having only been able to play conference games this year, Luca far exceeded expectations on the field," commented head coach Joey O'Keefe. "His ability to be in the right place and finish in the back of the net is second to none in the conference. The sky's the limit for him and he is eager to add more to his game as a pure goal scorer. We wait in anticipation to see the type of impact in a full-season and during his long tenure ahead at Biola."
Ethan Hardin was chosen for the second-consecutive season. Last year, Hardin was a third team pick and this year he was named to the PacWest's Second Team.Â
Hardin scored six goals this season which was second-best on the Eagles. One of his goals was the Eagles' game-winner against PLNU. Hardin also won PacWest Player of the Week from his performance against Point Loma where he scored two goals and had an assist in Biola's 4-3 victory.
"Ethan's leadership and understanding of the game extends well beyond his age," reflected O'Keefe. "His role both on and off the field has been integral and he was the heartbeat of our team this season. In true game-changer status, when Ethan is not in the game, the team feels his absence. It is not often that a sophomore is voted to be a team captain, but that goes to show the influence and high character that he possesses. For the elite athlete he is, the character of this young man far exceeds any athletic accomplishment he will ever receive."
Biola's final selection was Tom Irion who was placed on the conference's third team. Irion played and started in every match but one, leading BU with 1,387 minutes. Irion was a key member of Biola's defensive line who also contributed offensively by scoring four goals and two assists. Two of Irion's four goals were penalty kick goals.
"Tom has been a humble and extremely consistent player on the back line this season," shared O'Keefe. "Not only was he a stand out defensive unit for our lineup, but he also provided creativity and offensive production when we needed it most. He has adapted quickly to the program and will be a focal point for our team as we build toward next season. His maturity and confidence bleeds into the locker room. Any young defender in the modern game can look to him as an example of what it takes to get successful at this level."
