Maximo Three-lovich Helps BU to Win

Biola men’s basketball picked up win number one with a strong showing against CSU San Marcos.

LA MIRADA --- The finale to the PacWest/CCAA Crossover for Biola (1-1) saw the team's first win in the opening weekend of competition. The Eagles led for 38 minutes and captured a 78-70 victory over CSU San Marcos (0-2) on Saturday evening in Chase Gymnasium.

Biola saw big performances across the offense, including 18 points from Maximo Milovich. The big man knocked down four treys, marking a career-high for the fourth-year player, who had never made more than two in a single game, previously.

The leading scorer on Saturday was Nathan Medina, who compiled 25 points in the victory. The sophomore scored from everywhere, hitting and-one layups and a pair of long balls from downtown.

Medina and Milovich gave the Eagles the jolt early, combining for the team's first eight points. Myja White scored the 10th point for BU, helping the team to a 10-2 lead. The team kept up the momentum and held onto the edge throughout the entirety of the first half.

The Eagles were extremely efficient in the second half, as the team expanded its advantage. BU sank 14 field goals on 24 attempts for a 58.3 field goal percentage, while shooting well from range with a 50.0 three-point percentage.

BU increased its lead to 11 at the nine-minute mark of the second half. White maximized the Biola lead with a layup plus a foul for an old-fashioned three-point play. The Cougars could only get within four for the rest of the contest, as the Eagles secured the 78-70 win.

"We just believed in each other tonight," said Medina after the game. "White and Esparza did a great job calming us down and helping us figure out the tempo that we need to play at, which helped us secure the game."

Daniel Esparza was a second half specialist, scoring all 12 of his points in the back half of the contest. The junior guard added five assists to lead the team.

White also eclipsed double-digits in the scoring column with 15 points on 4-5 shooting from the field.

Biola will return to the planks on Thursday, facing CSU San Bernardino on the road at 7:00 pm.
