A Tough Tussle

Biola dropped its season opener on Friday to Cal State LA, falling in a tight contest at home.

LA MIRADA --- Biola men's basketball (0-1) began its 2023-24 campaign on its home court on Friday night. The team took on Cal State LA (1-0) to open up the PacWest/CCAA Men's Basketball Crossover. A hard-fought contest got away from the Eagles in a 73-65 loss to CSULA.

Biola got off to a nice start in front of its home fans, hitting big shots to go up early. A three-point shot from Facundo Aranda put the Eagles ahead, 16-10, right before the second media timeout stoppage.

Nathan Medina was the driving force on offense for Biola. The sophomore went to work, scoring seven of the team's first nine points of the contest. He went on to post 16 points in the first half with three treys and six field goals. On the night, Medina recorded 21 points, shooting over 50 percent from the field and from beyond the arc.

CSULA ended the opening half on a tear, holding the Eagles scoreless for over two minutes of action. In the final 2:13 of the first half, the Golden Eagles put together a 7-0 run to take a 32-29 lead at the break.

The visitors continued to push their advantage coming out of halftime and forced a timeout from Biola, after taking a 41-33 lead. CSULA grabbed its biggest lead at 14 but the Eagles fought back.

A 15-4 run for Biola turned the tide and created hope for a comeback. Over a six minute stretch the Eagles made nine free throws to go along with three layups from Tyus Parrish-Tillman to put them back into the game.

Back-to-back BU turnovers stifled the team's momentum and CSULA rebuilt its lead to 10 and finished off the 73-65 final.

Turnovers plagued the Eagles throughout the contest. 28 BU giveaways made way for 31 points for CSULA. The Golden Eagles also dominated in the paint, outscoring BU, 38-22 down low.

As a team, Biola collected eight rejections on Friday with Parrish-Tillman leading the way with five blocks.

Casey Cappo went a perfect eight-for-eight from the charity stripe and logged a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Maximo Milovich also dominated the glass, picking up eight offensive boards and six defensive for 14 total.

Three student-athletes saw their first action as Eagles on Friday, including Myja White, Facundo Aranda, and Garrison Sherman.

Biola will be back on the court inside Chase Gymnasium on Saturday, facing CSU San Marcos at 5:30 pm.
