Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Strong and Steady

The BU men’s water polo squad was victorious in its conference opener, extending its winning streak to seven.

LA MIRADA --- The good times kept rolling for Biola, as the team defeated the visiting Golden Eagles of Concordia (6-9, 0-1 WWPA) for its seventh-straight win. The Eagles (11-9, 1-0 WWPA) never trailed in their conference opener on the way to a 13-8 victory.

For the first time in program history, Biola defeated Concordia in the regular season. "It was great to get our first conference win under our belt, especially against Concordia, which we have not had the best record against in the past" commented head coach Rick Nordell. "We are a different team this year and I am very proud of how the guys are playing right now."

The team entered the game red hot with a winning streak of six and maintained the momentum with win number seven in a row. The reigning WWPA Defender of the Week, Mitchell Carpenter, stayed strong in goal, picking up 18 saves in 32 minutes played. The junior only allowed eight goals to help the defense allow less than 10 goals for the eighth time this year.

"We have a huge number of guys contributing. We had nine guys scoring that game, which was fantastic," added Nordell.

Nine Eagles impacted the scoreboard for the 13 goal team total. Seven came in the first half, leading to a 7-3 halftime advantage for BU. Caleb Hernandez shined for BU in the opening 16 minutes, tallying all three of his goals in the early going.

CUI kept it even in the third but the Eagles extended their lead by one in the fourth to cement the 13-8 victory. The five-goal final margin marked the seventh-straight game with Biola winning by at least four goals.

Nolan Rapp was a big part of the offense in the scoring column. Rapp stepped up in the second half, scoring all three of his goals between the third and fourth periods.

Three Eagles made well-rounded contributions with Roman Saroyan, Maxwell Osborn, and Nick Murray each landing one goal and two assists.

Biola will continue conference play on Thursday, taking on Fresno Pacific at home at 1:00 pm.
