WAIKOLOA VILLAGE, Hawaiʻi—The Biola women's golf team ended the first round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate in 12th with a team score of 305 at the Waikoloa Village Course.
The Eagles battled a field of 18 teams, two of which were ranked in the Women's Golf Coaches Association's (WGCA) preseason poll and two who were receiving votes. The two ranked teams were No. 10 Cal State San Marcos and No. 14 Cal State East Bay and the two teams receiving votes were University of Texas at Tyler and Cal State Monterey Bay.
Cal State San Marcos is the current leader of the Dennis Rose with a team score of eight-under-par 280. Sonoma State (291) and Cal State East Bay (292) round out the top three.
Melanie Reyes led Biola with a score of two-above-par 74. The Junior chases the invitational's leaders Daniela Andrade (CSULA) and Diana Delgado (CSUSM) by six strokes.
The Eagles' next-best scorer was Laura Ortiz who shot four-above-par 76 and was tied for 41st on the leaderboard.
Behind Ortiz was Karis Haltom (T53, 77), Brady Turnquist (T61, 78), and Jessica Cornelius (T61, 78).
Rachel Shaw competed as an individual and ended her first round with par (72) which left her tied for ninth on the leaderboard. Shaw trails the invite's leaders Daniela Andrade (CSULA) and Diana Delgado (CSUSM) by just four strokes.
All of the Eagles had at least one birdie in the first round. Haltom, Shaw, and Cornelius led BU with two each. Turnquist, Ortiz and Reyes all had one.
Biola still have 18 rounds to go as they are set to begin their final round at 11 a.m. PT and our just four strokes behind the 11th place team (UT Tyler).
