Crashing Waves

The Eagles wrapped up their Hawaii road trip with a win at UHH in four sets.

HILO, Hawaii --- Biola saw its road trip finish on the Big Island in a matchup against the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (8-10, 5-5 PacWest). BU (13-6, 9-3 PacWest) only dropped one set, while pulling off the 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 25-16 victory.

Saturday's contest was a close-knit fight with 32 ties and 15 lead changes.

BU was great at the net, forcing 29 attack errors from the hosting Vulcans. Biola picked up nine total blocks on the night with five different Eagles recording at least one block assist. Abigail Copeland took part in the majority of blocks, notching five block assists on Saturday.

Kendall Vandertuig stood out on the attack with 12 kills on 33 swings. The redshirt sophomore was efficient with a .204 hitting percentage, while also contributing six digs and two total blocks. Meredith Fisher matched her teammate with 12 kills, offering 14 points on the night.

Abby Brewster and Hannah Hanson combined for 44 assists, leading the offense from the setter position. Brewster surpassed the 20-assist mark with 23 and also tallied seven kills on the attack.

Set One: After erasing a 3-0 BU edge, the Vulcans took their own three-point lead. A well-placed timeout interrupted the flow and Biola scored three-straight out of the break for a 14-14 tie. BU went up by four late in the set at 23-19, following a service ace from Mary McDonnell. UHH cut it back down to 23-22 but once again a timeout from head coach Aaron Seltzer grounded the team and the Eagles grabbed the final two points to win the set.

Set Two: Errors plagued the Eagles, as Hawaii Hilo evened the match at one set apiece. UHH utilized a 6-1 run to open up a 11-6 lead with help from three-consecutive BU errors. Biola reeled it back into just a three-point deficit, forcing a UHH timeout. The reset was just what the Vulcans needed, as they rattled off seven-straight points to put the set firmly in their grasp.

Set Three: 14 ties and seven lead changes made for an intense set. The two teams were even at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, and 21, before the Eagles broke loose. Mary McDonnell served up excellence, landing an ace and then firing off back-to-back serves that left the Vulcans off balance, leading to a Biola set-winner.

Set Four: Biola put together its best offensive performance of the match with 14 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. A pair of three-point runs for Biola turned a 14-9 lead into a 20-10 comfortable advantage on the way to a win.

Biola will return home for its next contest, facing Hawaii Hilo once again on Saturday, October 28 at 3:00 pm.
