Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Second Half Success

The Eagles dominated the back half of Friday’s matchup and secured the team’s best season in program history.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (16-11) saw a potential preview of the WWPA conference tournament, as the team battled the Gannon Golden Knights (6-6) on Friday morning. The east vs west contest favored the Eagles, who overcame a 5-4 halftime deficit to take home a 12-8 victory.

The BU men's water polo squad continued to show their improvement with the team's 16th win of the 2023 season. With three matches remaining, the Eagles have already secured its best record in the program's three-year history.

"We had a good defensive effort on our part but we missed a lot of shots," commented Nick Murray. "We had plenty of opportunities but we need to work on finishing the ball."

On the day, the Eagles outshot the visitors 47-29 but landed just four more goals. Those missed opportunities allowed the Golden Knights to open up a lead in the first half.

Gannon put together five goals in the first half to grab a one goal halftime lead. The final goal of the half came on a power play, as the Golden Knights moved ahead on a score with two ticks left on the clock in the second quarter.

The BU squad responded in quarter number three, tallying four unanswered goals to regain control. Caleb Hernandez knotted the game at five two minutes into the stanza, before Roman Saroyan gave the Eagles the lead with the help of an assist from Mitchell Carpenter.

Ultimately, Biola won the battle in the second half with an 8-3 margin. Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo capped off the match with a beautiful lob shot in the waning seconds of the contest.

Eight different goal-scorers littered the stat sheet for Biola with Murray leading the way with three and Kyle Seifen and Hernandez following with two apiece.

Biola will hit the road for its next contest, facing Redlands on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
