Eagles Win Exhibition

The Biola Boys hit the road and grabbed a 10-7 exhibition win over Occidental in preparation for the regular season.

LOS ANGELES --- The Eagles faced the Occidental Tigers in an exhibition game before the regular season starts this coming Friday. With a new head coach and a few new faces joining the team, the Eagles came together to notch a win at 10-7 on Saturday.

Biola freshman from Fountain Valley, California Blake Wentz got the ball to start. Wentz walked two in the first inning but ended up leaving both on base. He then came out and pitched a quick 1-2-3  second inning, including a strikeout. Through three innings, Wentz gave up just one run in his start.

Biola drew first blood on Saturday with an RBI single from Tyler White. White's single to centerfield capitalized on a two-out error by the Tigers to help give BU a 1-0 lead.

After Wentz's quick second inning, the Biola lineup was ready to take the advantage. A pair of extra-base hits helped the Eagles to a four-run inning, boosting them to a 5-0 lead. Wyatt Duncan set up the scoring situation with a double to left and a walk from Brenden Bell, a hit from James Whitman and a double from White brought in the runs for the big inning.

The Tigers had deja vu, as they faced the same first three batters in the fourth as they did in the third. Not only did they face the same three batters, but they saw all three of those same batters on base again. Five walks in the frame meant a pair of easy scores for Biola, giving the visitors a 7-1 lead.

The Tigers responded in the sixth inning, tacking on five runs for themselves. The big blast came by way of a grand slam, closing the gap to just 7-6.

Following three scoreless innings, the Eagles offense awakened with an important rally in the eighth. Whitman took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity, crushing a three-RBI double to left field.

Biola's Jake Anderson came in to relieve Gabe Magallan in the eighth, where he struck out the first two batters and retired the third with a groundout to shortstop. Anderson held on to the Biola lead, securing the 10-7 final in BU's favor.

The Eagles will hold their season and home opener on Friday, February 3 when they host CSU San Marcos at 2:00pm.
