On the Cusp

The Eagles were inches from victory over 18th-ranked APU but came up short on the road.

AZUSA, Calif. --- A Wednesday evening at the Felix Event Center played host to the Cornerstone Cup. The Eagles looked to overtake the No. 18 Azusa Pacific Cougars (17-3, 12-1 PacWest) on their home court in Azusa. Biola (9-10, 7-4 PacWest) overcame a slow first quarter to take a late lead but the final margin fell in APU's favor at 73-69.

Over the last eight games, the Eagles have relied on their defense. In the stretch BU pulled together six wins, while holding the opponent to under 70 points. For just the second time in the span, the team's foe crept above 70 and the for the second time the Eagles came up short.

The grind began in the second quarter on Wednesday night, as the Eagles fell behind, 24-12 through 10 minutes. Back-to-back threes and an 8-0 run helped Biola recover from the double-digit hole just three minutes into the period. Biola came within four at one point in the quarter but APU bounced back for a nine-point halftime lead.

The Eagles continued to apply the pressure, as the second half was underway. Through five minutes of play, Biola put together a 9-2 rally with buckets from four different players, including Jordan Rabe, Natasa Radovic, Madi Chang, and Jessa Thurman. By the end of the third, APU pushed back but the Eagles ultimately cut into the Cougar lead by two, leaving the third at 58-51.

The fireworks started in the final stanza. Laila Walker kicked it off with a three-pointer in the opening minute. The visitors continued to rally and tied the game at the 3:52 mark with a long ball from Eleni Cabrera. Then, for the first time in the contest the Eagles took the lead. A strong defensive possession was followed by an and-one from Walker, giving BU a 67-64 lead with just under three minutes to go.

As the clock waned, the pressure mounted. APU provided a response, retaking the lead at 69-67 with 1:48 left. Offenses then went quiet until Rabe tied the game with 11 seconds left, which shortly made it seem like overtime would follow. Unfortunately, Azusa Pacific connected on a game-winning three-pointer, ending the Biola comeback push.

Laila Walker was a force on offense, tallying 21 points with four treys. The guard played 39 minutes and led the squad with four assists and two steals as well.

Making an impact across the board, Aysia Johnson had her hands full with seven points, four assists and a team-high nine rebounds.

Cabrera and Radovic joined Walker with double figures in scoring on Wednesday, finishing with 12 and 10, respectively.

The Eagles will return home for their next contest, taking on Chaminade on Friday at 6:00 pm.
