CLAREMONT, Calif. — Biola went down 8-3 in the third quarter before rattling off six-consecutive goals to regain a lead and temporarily change the landscape of its rematch with Mount St. Mary's on Friday.
The Herculean third-quarter effort was, unfortunately, not enough to secure a victory against the Mountaineers who would prevail 11-9.
The Mount St. Mary's offense was very consistent throughout as they scored three goals in the first, second and fourth quarters and two goals in the third. Biola outscored the Mount 5-2 in the third quarter to tie the game at eight goals each heading into the final frame.
A Nolan Rapp cross-cage tally on an early fourth-quarter 6-on-5 opportunity completed the BU comeback and gave Head Coach Rick Nordell's Eagles their first lead in this one.
Rapp found the back of the net twice in this outing as he was responsible for Biola's seventh and Biola's ninth goals.
The momentum of the comeback effort was stunted just after they took the lead as the Eagles' pressure passing was not quite up to snuff down the stretch and Mount St. Mary's took advantage with a plethora of takeaways.
The Mount scored the game's final three goals to lock down the win, including back-to-back tallies from their top scorer, Tommaso Baldineti for the goals 10 and 11.
Biola scored on a higher percentage of its shots, the Eagles were excluded four times fewer and the BU power play was more effective than that of The Mount, but the turnovers really haunted Biola this time.
Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo (2) and Joshua Halopoff (2) joined Nolan Rapp as multi-goal scorers for the Eagles in this contest.
The loss drops the team's record to 6-12 overall. Saturday holds a pair of tough competitors for BU as the Eagles face a pair of top-10 NCAA Division III opponents. First up is Whitter (4-8) at 9 a.m. and then it's another go at Chapman (7-6) at 2:20 p.m.
