SOUTH JORDAN, Utah— The Biola women's golf team executed their best round of the Westminster Wasatch Invitational in the final day of play, cutting off two strokes with a round of 304 at the Glenmoor Golf Club.
The women's golf team saw improvement in every round, shaving off 16 strokes the day before with a round of 306.
Biola began the tournament in ninth place and improved to sixth the second day, a ranking they held in the third round after shooting their best team score of 304.
"As a team we knew it would be challenging to play catch up after shooting 322 on the first day," stated head coach Jane Carr. "The team gave it a valiant effort with a 306 and 304. I'm really proud of how the team fought back. We had hoped to overcome a few more teams today, but fell short. It was a great experience for our players to play in such a competitive field."
The Eagles were the highest finishing PacWest Conference team, 29 strokes above Academy of Art (eighth place, 961) and 38 ahead of Dominican (10th, 970).
The top three teams of the invitational were University of Tampa (891), Colorado Christian (907), and Colorado Mesa (922). Ana Maria Jimenez Rios (University of Tampa) was the Westminster Wasatch medalist, totaling par (216) in the three days of play.
Rachel Shaw and Madison Voisard tied for the Eagles best rounds today, shooting 74. Shaw cut off six strokes from the first two rounds and moved up 10 slots on the leaderboard.
Voisard also moved up, improving four spots in the final round which landed her in sixth place. Voisard showed her maturity on the course, holding her composure when faced with adversity on the 14th hole where she lost two balls off the tee in the rough. Once Voisard located her balls she bounced back with a birdie, par, bogey and another birdie to secure her two-over-par finish of the day.
"Madison continues to make a huge contribution to our team," said Carr. "She is a seasoned competitor having played D1 golf and it really shows. She is a great mentor to her teammates and always has an encouraging word."
Behind Voisard (79, 72, 74) was Brady Turnquist in 15th (79, 73, 77), Shaw in 21st (80, 80, 74), Melanie Reyes in 42nd (84, 81, 79), and Abigale Morris tied for 45th (84, 83, 81).
Along with Shaw, Reyes and Morris also shot their best rounds of the invite, both taking off two strokes.
Emily Cons competed as Biola's individual for the tournament. She carded an 87 in the last day and ended up tied for 44th.
The women's golf team heads home to prepare for their next tournament in Dallas, Texas. The Eagles will compete in the West Regional Preview on October 2 at the Golf Club of Dallas.
