Eagles Soar over Hawks

Biola remained undefeated inside Chase Gym, sliding past Holy Names on Friday night.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles spread the love on Friday night with 15-of-16 players touching the court in a win. Biola (5-5, 2-1 PacWest) put together a 3-1 victory over PacWest foe Holy Names (5-6, 0-3 PacWest) inside Chase Gymnasium, starting the weekend out strongly.

BU picked up its second home win in as many attempts with the rout of HNU.

From the jump the Eagles were on their game. The opening set saw 14 kills from BU and just five from the visiting Hawks. Biola added six blocks and a .229 team hitting percentage for a 25-16 score in set number one.

HNU would not go away easily, battling back in the second set. The Hawk defense stifled the BU attack, forcing a -.025 BU hitting percentage with key digs and blocks. Attack errors tripped up BU, resulting in 11 points for the visitors. The Hawks took advantage, evening the match at one game apiece with a 25-21 set.

With the match in balance, both teams looked to take control and build their momentum. Through the early stages of the third game, the status quo remained with HNU holding a miniscule lead at 12-11.

The barn doors were blown off by the Eagles to finish off the third. An 11-2 run changed the pace of the match, as the host squad firmly grabbed a hold of the match at hand. Dominique Kirton stepped up in the rally, logging three kills to help cap off a 25-19 set win for BU.

Nothing could stop the Eagles, as the match transitioned into the fourth set. With the match on the line, BU exploded for a 10-1 lead on the back of six-straight serves from Bri Bellfi. The advantage continued to balloon, before hovering at 13 points for the remainder of the set. Abigail Copeland ended the day with a kill, giving BU its largest lead at 25-11.

Abby Brewster orchestrated a strong BU attack on Friday, offering up 42 assists. The impressive total moved her career mark to 983. On the night, Brewster recorded a double-double with 12 digs on the backend.

10 different Eagles landed a kill in the win. The leader of the clubhouse was none other than Anna Aubele with 15 for her ninth double-digit performance. Just like Brewster, Aubele logged a double-double on Friday, adding 11 digs to her day. Kirton followed with 12 kills of her own, which made for a season-best.

The BU defense put together its best outing of 2022, limiting the HNU attack. The Hawks only mustered a hitting percentage of .058 with 35 total kills.

Julia Peet saw her collegiate debut on Friday, appearing in one set and logging a dig.

Biola volleyball is back in Chase Gym for a contest against Dominican on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
