Nearly Pulled it Off

Wednesday’s contest could not be closer with the Eagles playing wire-to-wire with Chapman.

ORANGE, Calif. --- Biola men's water polo competed under the lights on Wednesday night, playing Chapman (4-1) on the road. The second contest of the season between the two teams was determined by a single goal, as the Panthers defeated Biola (2-7) in a 10-9 nail-biter.

The game rested on a razor-thin edge from start to finish. Throughout the 32 minutes, BU and CU tied six times and Chapman held the largest lead of the match of just three.

The fourth period saw the fireworks with five goals in a three minute stretch. Biola started the fourth on the backfoot, down 8-6. The first score in the rally came from Biola's Maxwell Osborn, cutting the deficit to one. The two teams then traded goals within 15 seconds of each other to bring the score to 9-8 for Chapman.

Freshman Caleb Hernandez stepped up next for the Eagles. The BU attacker found the back of the net on a powerplay to even the game at nine with 3:08 on the clock.

The hosting Panthers had other things in mind though and reclaimed their lead. A goal from CU 30 seconds after Biola's was ultimately the game-winner in the 10-9 final.

BU was the more aggressive team on offense, putting up 32 shots as a team. For the second-straight game, Osborn led the way in the scoring column, collecting three goals on Wednesday.

Overall, seven Eagles impacted the scoreboard, including Hernandez who notched his first collegiate score. Matthew Vinson also tallied a goal, doing so for the third-straight match.

Mitchell Carpenter secured eight saves in the contest, while recording all 32 minutes in goal. The goalkeeper also kept active hands on CU passes, nabbing four steals.

The Eagles will look to return to the win column in a WWPA matchup on Thursday, September 22 at Cal Baptist at 12:00 pm.
