Eagles Set Program-Best

Biola shoots an even-par 288 on the final day at NCAA West Regionals.

May 04, 2022

STOCKTON, Calif. — Biola Women's Golf ended with a bang on Wednesday, shooting its best single round in program history to close out its first appearance in the NCAA Division II postseason.

The Eagles combined to shoot an even-par score of 288, which was the third-best score of the day among all the 12 teams in the field. It was a 15-stroke improvement from the Eagles' first round of the tournament and a 5-stroke improvement from Biola's previous lowest round of 293.

Two Eagles shot under-par for the day, with Brady Turnquist and Lauren Lee both turning in two-under tallies of 70. Rachel Shaw shaved off seven strokes from yesterday to shoot her second-best round of the year (73). Sami Penor and Melanie Reyes both also improved upon their scoring from yesterday, shooting a pair of 75s.

Biola ends its first west region championship in ninth place, improving one spot from yesterday and sitting within 10 strokes of what would've qualified them for the NCAA National Championships (fifth).

It was about as good of an ending to a historic season as you could possibly draw up. Head Coach Jane Carr secured the program's first conference title in program history, cleaned up with five individual all-conference honors and two special conference awards and represented the PacWest well at the regional level.

The 288 showcases what could be possible next year, as all four counting scores came from returning players who will be either juniors or sophomores in 2022-23.

The team's one senior, Sami Penor, had a fantastic going-away party. She led the team in tournament scoring and finished 21st overall on the individual leaderboard.

Penor had a phenomenal spring season by winning a tournament, racking up three top-10s and leading the team in scoring five times out of eight tournaments. This tournament was her second-best of the year as she carded a 223 with round totals of 72, 76 and 75.

She managed an Eagle in her final collegiate round, dropping in a lengthy, bending putt to secure a three on hole 16.

Lauren Lee, who tied with Turnquist for the best final round, also managed an Eagle on day three. Hers was on a par-4 later in her day. She recorded a two on hole number five. That tally was a part of an impressive closing stretch for her. The Eagles' freshman shot eight pars, the eagle and a birdie over her final 10 holes of the tournament.

Turnquist's excellent final round was built by a fantastic first nine holes. The sophomore began her day with back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 100 and shot three-under for her first nine holes. After back-to-back bogeys to start her final nine, she closed out with six pars and a birdie.

Brady, Biola Athletics' 2021-22 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, finished this tournament with her second-best score of the year (226).

While the Eagles do not advance in this year's tournament, they can certainly close out the year with fond memories of a fantastic final round and the pride of being the most successful Biola Women's Golf team…yet.
