Close, and Not So Close

Biola's women suffer painfully close loss while the men blow out Fresno Pacific.

April 15, 2022

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRESNO, Calif. — The Biola Tennis programs closed the book of the 2022 regular season on Good Friday, traveling up to Fresno to face the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds for the last match against a conference opponent prior to next week's PacWest Championships.

The men's team completed the season sweep over FPU with a 7-0 victory, which paired nicely with their 7-0 home win over the Sunbirds back at the end of February. The women's team will finish with a season series split against FPU following a 6-1 loss on Friday.

These results bring the women's team to a final regular season mark of 20-4, while the men finish at 16-7 following wins in four of the final five matches of the year.

Biola's men earned the doubles point with wins on No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, and were leading at the top spot when the clinch occurred. Then, the Eagles clinched the match quickly with a trio of straight-set singles victories preceding three super breaker matches.

Antonio Rosales Varnona and Callen Hein only surrendered a grand total of five games between their four sets won to clinch points for Biola at No. 2 and No. 5. It was Rosales Varona's 10th win of the season and Hein's ninth.

Tomas Gomez was the one to clinch the win for Biola though with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 3 flight. Like Hein, Gomez ended the regular season with nine singles wins. Today's effort saw him improve to 4-0 when playing at No. 3.

Sebastian Herrera, Isaac Cordova and Ashton Heynes did not just mail it in once Biola clinched the win. That trio all overcame surprise set losses to press through adversity and win tight super breaker battles. All three of the breakers were within three rally points of each other (10-7, 10-8, 10-7). Heynes finishes his season 6-1, including 5-0 when playing No. 6.

Colbeyshae Emery picked up the lone victory for Biola in the women's match with a straight-set defeat of the Sunbirds' top player, Maria Borodii. Emery is peaking at the right time for this BLT team as she's won her last five matches and was dominant against Borodii today after needing a 7-5 third-set win to get the victory the first time the two went head-to-head. Emery ends her regular season 16-4 in singles play and has wins in nine of the last 10 times out.

The 6-1 final score is a bit deceiving because the women's outing was much more competitive than that final lets on. In fact, only a single game in two separate singles matches made the difference between the 6-1 final and what could've been a 4-3 final.

Both Lilly McNeill at No. 4 and Ines Diaz at No. 6 lost their third set by a 7-6 scoreline in heartbreaking defeats. Both women had won the first set and then were forced to play three after surrendering second-set comebacks.

Brooke Fager and Mary Brascia both also lost in three sets, illustrating how narrow the margin between these two sides was on Friday. The margin is narrow as well between the two teams as we look ahead to the PacWest tennis championships. This pair is likely to be seeded third and fourth on the women's side heading into the tournament.

Both Biola teams will likely get a first-round bye at the PacWest Championships as almost certain top-4 seeds. This means competition for BU will begin at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club on Thursday, April 21.
