It’s Hammer Time

Jada Pierce and Joley Sproul nabbed PacWest crowns, as the Eagles wrapped up the PacWest Championships on Saturday.

SAN DIEGO, Calif --- Biola track and field completed competition at the PacWest Championships hosted by Point Loma on Saturday. The BU squad collected a pair of event wins and both teams took fifth place in the conference meet. Biola's men notched 47 points and the women tallied 102, as Azusa Pacific nabbed the top spot on both sides.


The Biola record-holder in the hammer throw strutted her stuff at the PacWest championships on Saturday. Jada Pierce was one of the first performers on day two, offering up her best throw in her first attempt. The junior improved on her own program-record with a mark of 49.31m.

Pierce picked up the event championship to start the day with 10 points for Biola. The double-digit point total immediately pushed the Eagles ahead of Fresno Pacific and into third place with 38 total team points.

Joley Sproul kept up the momentum that she built on Friday, continuing the heptathlon on day two. The long jump got the multi-event back in motion and Sproul added another top-mark, nabbing first with a personal-best jump of 5.10m. Sproul secured her victory in the heptathlon with a dominant showing in the 800. Not only did the freshman take first in the 800 but she came in nearly 16 seconds faster than the field at 2:27.81. 

With the top spot in the 800 and a personal-record in the javelin throw, Sproul earned the heptathlon crown. The freshman finished with a personal-best 4334 points on her way to earning 10 points for the BU squad.

The 4x100 relays came next for Biola on the track. The men's group recorded five points with a fourth place finish at 42.52. The women followed them up with a time of 50.47 for fifth place and three points.

In the women's 1500, Hannah Champness got off to a fast start. The senior was in third through the first lap and ultimately scored three points for the Eagles. A time of 4:35.40 shaved two seconds off her previous best, as she landed in sixth on Saturday.

Hanna Bevan posted a podium finish with her best leap as an Eagle in the high jump. A 1.68m mark was good enough for second place and eight points for BU. Joshua Jackson added to the team's total in the triple jump with a leap of 14.12m. The effort was fifth place in the field and tacked on four points. On the women's side, Rebeka Preston and Kenna Chism impressed in the triple jump. A bronze medal came in for Preston who nabbed third with a jump of 12.09m. Chism added three points with a sixth place finish at 10.89m.

The 100 hurdles featured a seventh place finish from Heidi Sowers. The graduate student tallied two points for BU with a time of 14.98. 

Mathias Davis put together his best showing in the 400 with a mark of 48.69. The personal-record was good for fifth place and four points for BU. Dominic Castro followed in the 100 dash and tallied two points with a seventh place showing. The speedster came across at 11.05 for a personal-best effort.

The track excellence continued with Aidan Arredondo in the 800. Arredondo offered up his best performance with a time of 1:55.07 to land in fifth for four points. Kenzie Elliott competed in the 800 on the women's side and tacked on four points with another fifth place finish for BU. A time of 2:15.51 made for a personal-best by .4 seconds for Elliott.

The Eagles put competitors in the finals for the 400 hurdles on both sides. The BU women combined to collect five points in the event, as Sowers took sixth at 1:05.49 and Sophia Morris took seventh at 1:08.23. For the men, Christian Lukens notched his collegiate-best mark at 56.63 to finish in sixth, while recording three points for the team.

Pierce continued her strong day with the final field event. The junior competed in the shot put and recorded a podium finish with a personal-best throw of 12.48m for second place. Her best throw came in the final attempt, moving her from fifth to second.

The sprints continued on the track with the 200 dash. Cole Muller stepped up for BU and nabbed fifth with a time of 21.81, which made for his new best mark. 

The final individual event on Saturday was the 5000 run, featuring Jerry Baltzer for the men and Lynette Ruiz and Grace Catena for the women. Baltzer nabbed seventh in the long distance race with a time of 15:04.57 for two points. 

Ruiz landed on the podium and was followed by Catena who came in one spot behind. The bronze medal went to Ruiz in third place with a time of 17:07.62. Catena logged a time of 17:53.76 for fourth place, as the duo combined for 11 points.

The relays returned to finish the day, as Trevor Hormel, Muller, Garrett Carswell and Davis led the Biola squad in the 4x400. The foursome finished on the podium with a time of 3:15.99 for second place and eight points. The BU women grabbed fifth place and came up .3 seconds short of the school record.

Biola's 2022 season will continue next Saturday at the Occidental Invitational.
