SAN DIEGO, Calif. ---  Opening day of competition at the PacWest Track and Field Championships saw six schools face off at Point Loma. The Eagles notched a pair podium finishes on Friday, as the men notched 11 points for fifth and the women grabbed 28 for fourth place.

The Biola record-holder in the 10000, Lynette Ruiz, made her impact in the last event of the day. The women's 10000 featured a second place finish from the BU freshman, who crossed the line at 36:36.50. The silver placement earned eight points for Biola, which made for the highest total for the squad.

In the race prior, Brady DeHaven scored for the men in the 10000 run. Sixth place and three points came in from the senior, as he offered a time of 31:46.16 on Friday night.

Joley Sproul put together an all-around effort in the heptathlon, landing in first among a group of four competitors. The field competed in four of seven events, including the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m dash. Sproul finished in the top-two for each event and logged personal-bests in the 100 hurdles (15.29) and shot put (9.00m). The one-day total of 2,606 points was good enough for first place on day one.

Troy Yarter added a personal-record and top-three placement with his attempt in the javelin throw. All six throws were fair attempts from Yarter, who surpassed his previous best mark by .4 meters. On Friday, Yarter finished in third place with a mark of 53.96m, earning six points for BU. In the women's javelin, Sara Chao nabbed eighth for one point, as she reached a personal-best at 35.09m.

The field events continued with top-eight and scoring performances from Reanna Maroon and Gigi Fierro. Fierro competed in the discus throw and tallied a mark of 39.48m, which bested her previous personal-record by over a meter. The throw was good enough for sixth place and three points. Maroon collected seventh place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.30m. The top-eight finish helped the freshman add two points to the team's total on Friday.

Rebeka Preston and Kenna Chism each scored for Biola in the long jump. Preston nabbed five points with a fourth place finish at 5.56, while Chism tallied three points with a six place finish at 5.06m.

The men's 3000 steeplechase featured one more scorer for the Eagles, as Charles Bailey cracked the top eight. Bailey logged a time of 9:52.07 in the event and nabbed seventh for two points.

Friday also held 13 preliminaries between the men's and women's events with the finals set for Saturday. Those qualifying for Saturday's finals include: Hannah Champness (1500), Kaela Berretta (1500), Charles Bailey (1500), Heidi Sowers (100 hurdles and 400 hurdles), Mathias Davis (400), Dominic Castro (100), Aidan Arredondo (800), Sophia Morris (400 hurdles) and Cole Muller (200).
