Pitching Showcase

Andrew Beauvais propelled the Eagles to a low-scoring win over HPU in game one on Thursday.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (19-25, 15-12 PacWest) and Hawaii Pacific (17-26, 11-20 PacWest) returned to Eagles Diamond on Thursday to finish out their four-game series with another doubleheader. The Eagles won their third-straight with a spectacular outing from Andrew Beauvais in game one, as the host squad came out with a 3-1 victory.

Beauvais drew the start and was the star of the show on Thursday afternoon. The righty was dealing, offering up his best performance of the 2022 campaign. Eight innings pitched and one run allowed defined the junior's third win of the season.

Each pitch Beauvais had in his arsenal was coming in the right spot, as he picked up a career-best nine strikeouts. Beauvais struck out the side in the second and completed his outing with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh and eighth frames.

Tyler Mead toed the rubber in the ninth to complete the contest for Biola. The BU closer picked up right where Beauvais left off, striking out the first two batters he faced. The final out came next as the two BU hurlers combined to retire 12-straight Sharks from the sixth through ninth innings. Mead's ninth inning was good for his third save of 2022.

HPU offered up their No. 1 starter, who put together a solid outing for the visitors. Through eight offensive appearances, the Eagles were kept off the scoreboard seven times but the one scoring frame was all they needed.

Despite the pitching showcase, the Eagles found their opportunity in the fourth inning. A fielding mishap opened the door for BU, as Oscar Serratos took first off an error. Rylan Greenlee kept things moving with a single to right field, creating a first and third situation for BU. The first run of the game crossed by way of a wild pitch for a 1-0 Biola edge.

The Biola bats were not done in the frame, beginning with Brenden Bell who reached with a walk. Taylor Justus brought home Greenlee for a second BU score with a single to center field. A force out at second base followed to put runners at first and third once again with two outs on the scoreboard. Matthew Nyce took advantage of a 2-1 count and added a two-out RBI with a single to left, building a 3-0 lead for the host squad.

The Sharks found their only success in the fourth with their lone extra-base hit within the first three games of the series. The one run in the fifth was all they could muster, as the Eagles closed out the 3-1 final.

Game two is set to start around 3:00 pm at Eagles Diamond.
