Shutting the Door

BU shut the door on a potential Hawaii Pacific comeback, as the Eagles held the visitors scoreless through eight-of-nine innings.

LA MIRADA --- For the second-straight four-game series, Biola won the opening day with a sweep in the first doubleheader. Game two went the way of the Eagles as they defeated the Hawaii Pacific Sharks in a 6-3 final.

Base running was crucial for the Eagles throughout the day on Wednesday. The team nabbed eight bases in the doubleheader, including three stolen bases in game two.

Movement on the base paths gave BU the lead, following back-to-back hits from Bobby Brown and Matthew Nyce. A grounder to the infield from Tyler Baca allowed Brown to reach home but Nyce added another tally after forcing a throw from the first baseman which went sailing for an error, giving BU a 2-0 lead.

The speed continued in the third, as Oscar Serratos started a rally with his legs. A leadoff single started the inning for the senior but he then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. The HPU infield moved in to prevent the score, as Brenden Bell stepped up to the plate. A grounder to the shortstop looked to spell an easy out but Serratos scurried home and beat the throw to score a run for BU, while keeping both runners safe. Two walks later in the inning and an ensuing HPU error allowed for two more Biola scores.

The fourth brought more Serratos magic, who once again began with a single but ended up on third with just his feet on the base paths. This time a wild pitch put Serratos on second and he stole third to make a Greenlee single good for a 6-3 Biola edge.

Defensively, BU gave up one run in the third, before an error opened the door for more. Two unearned runs crossed the plate to give the visitors a brief advantage in the top of the third.

Jake Anderson stepped onto the mound for Biola to close the door in the third and changed the pace with his pitching. The righty hurler retired the first four batters he faced and allowed just one walk through the first 2.1 innings of his outing.

The day continued with defensive prowess on both sides, including a solid 4.1 inning scoreless outing for Anderson. The strong performance in relief made for his fourth win of 2022. Connor Butler made sure of that with a closing appearance. The lefty entered in the eighth and recovered from two walks to strike out three-straight to close the frame. All six outs from Butler were strikeouts, as the hard-throwing pitcher recorded his second save of the season.

Throughout the two-game day, Biola pitching kept the opposing hitters at bay. HPU picked up 14 hits on the day but could not muster a single extra-base hit.

Serratos and Greenlee made a great tandem in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the lineup. The duo accounted for over half of the team's hits with six combined. Serratos tallied four hits himself to go 7-9 on the day at the plate.

BU will return to Eagles Diamond for another doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific, beginning at 12:00 pm on Thursday.
