A Wonderful Win

The Eagles offered a complete game, including strong pitching, fielding and hitting to take down Hawaii Pacific in game one.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Boys returned to Eagles Diamond on Wednesday and found success against the visiting Hawaii Pacific Sharks. Game one ended with a 13-3 scoreline in Biola's favor, thanks to an impressive effort from the Eagles in every aspect of the game.

Hawaii Pacific struck first with a string of singles in the opening frame. Three-straight hits helped build a 2-0 lead for the visitors in the top of the first.

Rylan Greenlee had something to say in the next half inning. The designated hitter turned on a fastball and sent it over the fence in right-center for his ninth homer of 2022. The long ball also brought home Tyler White to knot the game at two apiece.

After an adventurous first inning, Gilbert Lopez settled in on the mound and took control. The righty drew the start on Wednesday and tacked on four scoreless frames, following the first.

Through his afternoon outing, Lopez delivered 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and only two runs allowed. The performance earned him the win on the bump and moved his season record to 3-3.

The BU bats did their job with runs in five of eight at bats. Biola grabbed the lead in the second with four hits and four runs. Andrew Lujan sparked the rally with a leadoff homer. White and Oscar Serratos each added an RBI for a pair of scores, before an HPU error brought in another BU run for a 6-2 BU lead.

With the dominance from Lopez and great relief from Nick Merkin, every additional score made for a more comfortable Biola advantage. Serratos made a splash in the seventh with a three-run no-doubt home run over the left field fence. The homer was number 14 for the BU infielder this year.

Merkin got the call from the bullpen and executed with 3.2 innings pitched and one run allowed. The three innings of relief made for his first career save in his first year at Biola.

Serratos and Taylor Justus highlighted the lineup in game one with three hits apiece. BU catcher Justus picked up a pair of doubles in the contest with two runs scored. Three more Eagles nabbed multiple hits in the game, as the team compiled a .429 batting average.

Game two of the midweek doubleheader is set to start at 3:30 pm at Eagles Diamond.
