Eagles Complete Beach Opener

Biola track and field competed at the Beach Opener this weekend with competition wrapping up on Saturday.

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- A wide range of teams took to the Jack Rose Track on Saturday to finish off the Beach Opener. Biola gave an all-around top-tier effort against some of the best competition across southern California.


The BU track and field squad shined in the long distance events. The men's and women's 3,000 events held the most Biola participants with plenty of top-10 and top-20 placements. 

The women put together an impressive performance which was led by Lynette Ruiz in third place. A time of 10:06.88 fell short of second place by mere milliseconds. Hannah Champness came in next at 10:18.30 in fourth place and was followed by Grace Catena in seventh at 10:22.47. The squad ultimately put five runners in the top-20, including Keira Coye and Britta Holmberg.

The men's 3000 meter race saw 10 BU competitors hit the track. Brady DeHaven, Aidan Tomasini and Jerry Baltzer each notched a top-20 finish in the race. DeHaven nabbed 15th at 8:49.74, Tomasini grabbed 19th at 8:55.15 and Baltzer finished right after in 20th with a mark of 8:56.09

Shelby Rogers offered up a fourth place finish in the 400 dash, headlining BU's second-best placement on the day. The senior posted a time of 56.95 to land amongst the top competition. Robin Ahlquist took 16th in the same event, coming in at 1:01.71.

The men's 400 hurdles also saw a top-10 finish from the Eagles. John Carswell logged a time of 57.19 for sixth place, impressing for BU. Christian Lukens added a 12th place finish in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 1:00.45. On the women's side, Sophia Morris nabbed 14th at 1:06.12 in the 400 hurdles. 

Hurdles success continued for Biola in the 100 meter hurdles, as Heidi Sowers took 15th at 16.13. Rebeka Preston kept it up with a mark of 16.75 and a placement of 21st. Preston also turned in a strong performance in the long jump with a mark of 5.22m for 17th.

Kenzie Elliott showed off her speed in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:23.76. The quick pace was 10th-best amongst the field. Jordan Gossett notched 17th place for the Eagles in the 800, crossing the finish line at 2:26.62.

The men's 200 and 400 sprints featured a few standouts for the Eagles. Trevor Hormel and Worthy Gutierrez competed in the 400 and nabbed 20th and 26th with times of 52.17 and 53.67, respectively. In the 200, Dillon Sunday showed out with a mark of 22.57 for 14th place. Alex White also finished amongst the top-20 with a time of 22.70. All six competitors for BU finished in the top 28.

The relays for Biola grabbed 10th (4:04.71) on the women's side and sixth (3:23.68) on the men's in the 1600 relay.

Hanna Bevan highlighted the field events for Biola on Saturday, offering a high jump of 1.60m. The strong mark was good to tie for fifth place. In the triple jump, Anna Willson came in 11th with a leap of 10.16m.

Cole Muller and Joshua Jackson carried the torch in the jumps for BU with Muller grabbing 14th in the long jump at 6.55m. Jackson tacked on a pair of nice efforts with a 16th place showing in the long jump and seventh place leap in the triple jump.

Women's shot put featured Jada Pierce for BU, who launched a toss of 11.10m for 18th place.

Biola will be back in action on Friday at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, California.
