Two By Two

Three-consecutive innings of two runs helped the Eagles secure a 11-4 win over Academy of Art.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- The Biola baseball team (7-8, 4-3 PacWest) continued to ride the high of its big game two win from Friday afternoon, as they entered Saturday's doubleheader at Academy of Art (6-12, 2-5 PacWest) . 11 runs came in from the Eagles, who scored the 11-4 triumph over ARTU in game one.

Patience at the plate sparked the BU offense in the early going in game one. ARTU tossed eight-straight balls to place Rylan Greenlee and Bobby Brown on base by way of two walks. A balk moved both runners into scoring position with no outs on the board. Andrew Lujan brought home the first run for BU with an RBI groundout out and Tyler White added another with an RBI single to give BU a 2-1 edge.

A four-pitch walk and a homerun for the Urban Knights matched the BU total for the second frame. Once again, the Eagles found themselves down by one run at 3-2.

Instead of a walk, Tyler Baca turned his shoulder and took a pitch to his body to get Biola's first base runner of the third. Back-to-back outs put the pressure on Greenlee but the first baseman answered with a two-run inside the park home run. A base hit to left center kicked off the glove of the diving center fielder, leading to an unusual and rare inside the park home run.

For the third-straight inning, Biola tacked on two runs when they came to the plate in the fourth. Brenden Bell opened up a 6-3 lead for the Eagles with a double down the right field line, scoring White and Taylor Justus.

Following the fourth, pitching took to the forefront of the contest to the benefit of the visiting Eagles. Only one run was scored by either team between the fifth and seventh innings, as the eighth frame approached with a 6-4 scoreline in BU's favor.

Justus gave Biola more breathing room in the eighth with a long ball with two outs. The homer was the first of the day for the Eagles that actually left the park and it was the first of the season for the BU catcher.

The Eagles were not done adding to their lead. Still boasting a three-run advantage, Biola made a splash in the top of the ninth with the first four batters reaching base. Oscar Serratos logged an RBI double to plate the second runner of the frame for Biola, before an error added another. A groundout from Justus scored the fourth runner for BU, creating a 11-4 margin that would hold through the final out.

Through the contest, the BU hurlers gave up just five hits and three earned runs, while tallying five strikeouts. Andrew Zittel picked up the win out of the bullpen, logging two innings pitched with only 16 total pitches thrown. Carson Cody and Jeff Woolson tag-teamed the final three innings and shut the door on the ARTU offense, allowing no runs and only one hit combined.

Four Eagles notched multiple hits in game one, including Baca, Serratos, Greenlee and Justus. Baca recorded his fifth multi-hit effort of the season, boasting a team-high batting average of .383.

Biola will finish off its four-game series with the Urban Knights later this afternoon with game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
