Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Cougars Overcome

Biola falls 5-2 at No. 18 Azusa Pacific.

AZUSA, Calif. — Biola Men's Tennis couldn't quite get it done on the road against rivals Azusa Pacific on Saturday. The No. 18 Cougars held tough on their home courts to complete the season sweep of BU.

APU won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 and then went on to win four of the six completed singles matches to work a 5-2 victory. This is an increase from the last time these two teams met, where the Cougars won just 4-3 in a tense match at the Biola Tennis Center.

Saturday's match was nearly identical to the meeting back in February as two of the three men who earned singles wins for Biola last time also won a match for BU today. The third won one set and lost his match in a very close super breaker that really could have landed either way.

Also just like the last meeting, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano had their match left unfinished following APU clinching the doubles point. The Eagles' duo were still fighting with a chance to get their 12th win of the year when the match transitioned to singles play.

Alexei Prokopchuk had the highest victory for Biola as he won out of the No. 2 singles spot. The third-year Eagle battled to win his first set via tiebreaker after they split games 7-6. He won the tiebreaker 7-3 and then worked through an equally nerve-wracking 6-4 win in the second set.

The other singles victory was from Alex Sedeno at the No. 5 spot. His match finished after the match was fully clinched for Azusa Pacific, meaning a super tiebreaker was used after he and APU's Ivan Noel Hornung split the first two sets (6-3; 2-6). Extra rallies were needed to decide the super breaker before Sedeno ultimately was victorious at 11-9.

Sebastian Herrera was the other Eagle to earn a singles victory in the last matchup between the two sides. He also had a super tiebreaker in his match, but he came up short at the No. 1 singles position, attaining six wins to his opponent's 10.

Prokopchuk has won four singles matches in a row and nine of his previous 10 as he improved to 16-2 on the season. Sedeno is right there with him at 13-2 and is 8-2 over the last 10.

The loss drops Biola to 12-6 overall with five regular season matches remaining. Up next for David Goodman's group is a 1 p.m. home match against Concordia University Irvine next Saturday.
