Needed Just a Bit More Time

The Eagles ran out of innings at the end of the game on Saturday, as their late surge came up short against Azusa Pacific.

LA MIRADA --- A large gap between Azusa Pacific (17-10) and Biola (12-12) seemed to be out of reach but the Eagles had a late push in them. The rally was too little too late, as the Cougars held on for the 14-11 final score.

The two teams finished out their three-game non-conference series on Saturday, as Biola hosted the single game. The APU high-powered offense notched three wins with at least 14 runs to sweep BU.

Saturday brought the closest contest in the series, thanks to nine unanswered runs for the Biola Eagles. The surge started in the sixth with a leadoff double from Rylan Greenlee. The extra-base hit led to a one-run frame for BU, cutting their deficit to 11.

Brandon Thomas started the fun in the seventh with a solo homer over the left field fence. The appearance at the plate was his first of the game, as he nabbed his first long ball of the season. A string of singles followed from Brenden Bell, Tyler Baca and Greenlee to add another score.

For the second-straight inning and in his second-straight at bat, Thomas hit the ball out of the park. The right fielder recorded another home run with two outs and Taylor Justus on first base, bringing the score to 14-7 at the end of the eighth.

With three outs left, the Eagles still had their work cut out for them in the ninth. The first two batters did their job, as Baca reached first and Oscar Serratos smacked a double to start the inning. One touched home off a Greenlee RBI and was followed by a Bobby Brown walk. A second out came next and brought Wyatt Duncan to the plate. The first baseman got a hold of a high fastball and ripped it over the left field fence for three Biola runs.

Suddenly, Biola crept up and worked its way to within three runs, despite trailing by 12 runs earlier in the contest. A walk extended the game and brought the tying run to the on-deck circle but the Cougars closed the door with a strikeout.

The tale of two stretches resulted in the 14-11 APU win, bringing Biola's record to 12-12 in 2022. The BU squad will be back in action at Point Loma with a doubleheader on Friday at 12:00 pm.
