Homers Aren’t Enough

The Biola Boys knocked the ball out of the park five times as a group but still came up short against APU.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Game one on Friday was an offensive shootout with 23 runs between the two squads. Home runs defined the day for the Eagles, as Oscar Serratos and Bobby Brown combined for five long balls to account for six of Biola's eight runs. The host squad Azusa Pacific had an answer though, pouring in big rallies for a 15-8 win over BU.

The first three innings seemed promising for the Eagles on Friday. Five unanswered runs meant a 5-0 lead for the visitors behind three scoreless frames from Andrew Beauvais on the mound.

Within the first four pitches of the contest, BU went up by two thanks to Serratos' first dinger. Tyler Baca led off the game with a single and touched home off of his teammate's two-run homer. A double from Rylan Greenlee and a two-out single from Tyler White gave the Eagles a three-run top of the first.

Serratos added to the lead with his second homer in the second inning but this time it was a solo shot. In the following inning, Bobby Brown left the yard for the first time on the day for another BU one-run homer.

APU got its revenge in the fourth. The Cougars held the Eagles without a run in the top of the frame and then put up a five-piece for themselves in their at bat, bringing the game even at five runs each.

Staying with the trend, the Eagles regained the lead on a round-tripper in the next inning. Brown notched his second homer of the game and his fifth of the season to put Biola up 6-5.

The lead held for one more inning, before the APU offense unleashed. The host squad tallied 10 runs between the sixth and seventh innings to break game one wide open.

Serratos offered more power to help alleviate the surge from Azusa Pacific. The senior got a hold of another pitch, nabbing his third home run of the game. No runners on base made for another solo homer, bolstering his season total to a team-best nine long balls.

The final movement for the BU offense came in the eighth with back-to-back singles starting the at bat. The single from Andrew Lujan moved Taylor Justus to third, which opened the door for an RBI groundout from White. The one-run frame was not enough though, as the Cougars brought it home for a 15-8 Biola loss.

Game two is underway in Azusa, as the Eagles look to split the day.
