Eagles Look Sharp

Metro State came to La Mirada and battled the Eagles on Thursday afternoon, resulting in a 6-1 BU victory.

LA MIRADA --- Biola men's tennis improved to 9-3 at the Biola Tennis Center, taking down Metro State (8-2) in the Thursday afternoon matchup. BU was looking great on the courts, nabbing the doubles point, before posting three straight-sets singles wins and earning a 6-1 overall triumph.

The newly ranked No. 47 Biola squad returned to conference play on Thursday and impressed against a MSU squad that was previously 3-0 against PacWest opponents.

The advantage was firmly in Biola's control through doubles action with courts one and two finishing at 6-2 for the Eagles. The duos of Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona and Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano each picked up their 11th wins for the 2022 campaign.

A 1-0 lead quickly ballooned into a match-clinching 4-0 lead with the dominant success of Prokopchuk, Rosales Varona and Tomas Gomez. Prokopchuk finished first on court No. 2, earning his second-consecutive straight-sets victory with a set of 6-0. The redshirt junior also recorded his team-best 15th singles win of the year.

No. 3 singles belonged to Rosales Varona, posting scores of 6-2 in each set for the triumph. Gomez saw his first action since March 11 and pulled off the match-clinching point on court No. 4. The freshman did not seem to lose a step in his return to the court, winning set one 6-4 and set two 6-1.

Alex Sedeno added another straight-sets win for BU. The righty notched a nail-biter in set number one, taking it in a tiebreaker, 9-7. The momentum fell completely the way of Sedeno for the remainder of the match, as he capped it off with a 6-1 second set.

Herrera and Isaac Cordova traded sets with their respective components, forcing their matches into a third set. A 10-point tiebreaker followed for Herrera, who squeezed out with a 11-9 win for his eighth win of the season. MSU got the better of the Eagles on the final court and in the final match to avoid the shutout.

The Eagles improved to 12-5 with the win and will be back on the court at Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 1:30pm.
