Too Little Too Late

The back half of Saturday’s doubleheader belonged to Hawaii Hilo but a late push from Biola nearly overturned the outcome.

LA MIRADA --- The Hawaii Hilo offense awakened to finish off the four-game series between the visitors and the Biola Eagles. The seven inning affair saw nine runs for UHH, as a final inning grand slam almost brought the Eagles back in a 9-7 defeat.

The visiting Vulcans found their groove at the start of game two on Saturday. All aspects of the game came together, as UHH tallied five runs in the first three innings to open up a 5-0 advantage.

The Hawaii Hilo starter, Aaron Davies, carried the defensive effort, holding the BU hitters at bay. 5.2 innings pitched and only two runs given up helped UHH hold a 5-2 lead through five frames.

A strong start was halted with the presence of Jeff Woolson on the mound for BU. The relief pitcher stopped the bleeding with three scoreless frames and very little action on the base path.

Tyler Baca led the way offensively, cutting back on the deficit. The leadoff hitter posted a double in the third for his first RBI and single in the fifth for his second.

The two Tylers in Baca and White carried the offensive load through the majority of the contest. The duo went a combined five-for-seven at the plate with three runs and two RBI.

Despite the rough beginning, the Eagles clawed within three with one inning remaining. The Vulcans made an essential stand in the top of the seventh, jumping further ahead with a huge four-piece for a 9-2 lead.

Hope seemed lost with three outs left but White brought back life with a leadoff triple. Taylor Justus tacked on a sacrifice fly to edge into the UHH lead.

BU started over with one out and no one on base. Chance Campbell and Bobby Brown drew walks and Baca added a single to load the bases with still just one out on the board. Oscar Serratos came to the plate next and quickly fell behind 0-2 in the count. Two strikes did not disturb Serratos, who launched a no-doubter over the left-center fence to bring BU within two runs.

With the tide turning towards the Eagles with only one out on the board, UHH needed to close the door. The visitors did just that and posted back-to-back strikeouts to finish the game.

As the four-game series concluded on Saturday, the Eagles moved to 11-9 on the year with a 8-4 PacWest record. Biola will return to action on Tuesday with a road matchup against Cal Poly Pomona.
