Continued Success

The Eagles had a successful start to their Saturday doubleheader with a 10-6 victory over Hawaii Hilo.

LA MIRADA — Biola continued its four-game series against the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans on Saturday with a doubleheader at Eagles Diamond. Game one maintained the pace from Friday's sweep for BU, as the hosting squad opened the day victorious, 10-6.

Brayden Englert drew the start for the Eagles and cruised through the first half of the contest. The first four innings featured all zeros on the scoreboard for UHH, as Englert held the visitors to just two hits through the stretch.

The BU lineup started to heat up in the fourth inning with back-to-back hits to open the at bat. Bobby Brown doubled, before moving to third on an Oscar Serratos single. The speedy Serratos nabbed second and forced an errant throw from the UHH catcher, allowing Brown to trot home to break the scoring seal. Serratos advanced to third on the error, setting up a sacrifice fly opportunity from Rylan Greenlee, giving BU the 2-0 lead.

A one-run fifth for the visitors did not slow the Biola momentum, as they came to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Andrew Lujan immediately answered the UHH run with a solo shot to the opposite field over the left field fence. The long ball marked his third of 2022.

The next three batters reached base for BU with a pair of singles and a walk. Tyler Baca logged the RBI with the second single, bringing in Tyler White for a 5-1 BU lead. Serratos and Evan Rowe logged two more hits in the frame, as the Eagles tacked on two more runs, while hitting through the lineup. In the fifth, BU tallied five hits, two walks and five runs scored.

Hawaii Hilo continued to fight with scoring rallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames to slowly cut down on their deficit. A strong start to the seventh forced a pitching change for the Eagles with a runner on third and just one out on the scoreboard. Nick Merkin got the ball and toed the rubber with the mission of shutting down the opportunity for the visitors. A strikeout and flyout ridded the Vulcans of a bases loaded situation, as Merkin led the Eagles out of the frame with no additional damage done.

More insurance runs came in the bottom of the eighth for Biola. A 7-4 lead needed some breathing room, as the BU squad loaded the bases in an attempt to lengthen the lead. BU sent in a pinch hitter for the situation with Wyatt Duncan digging into the box. Duncan put the ball back up the middle and into centerfield, bringing in two easy scores for Biola. Solid baserunning from the Eagles allowed a third run on the play, as Duncan took second on the throw home, drawing a throw from the Vulcans, which opened the door for Serratos to reach home.

The big play was a welcome sight, as the game shifted into the ninth the scoreboard reading 10-4. Two runs in the ninth did not shake the faith of the Eagles, who clinched their third win of the series.

Englert earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-1 on the season. The righty dealt a season-high 6.1 innings and eight strikeouts in the appearance.

The Eagles speed dominated the base path with five steals as a team.

Game two on Saturday is currently underway at Eagles Diamond with Biola looking for a series sweep of the Vulcans.
