Win When It Matters Most

Biola gets a critical tiebreaker win to clinch doubles and a pair of three-set singles wins to earn the match victory Friday.

March 18, 2022

LA MIRADA, Calif. — The good times continued at the Biola Tennis Center on Friday afternoon as the Eagles picked up their third win of the week and 13th in a row.

Biola hosted the Texas A&M Javelinas at the BTC for an afternoon match in the scorching Southern California sunlight. The Javelinas put forth a good effort, pressing the issue at four of the singles courts before Biola's might eventually shone through and led to a 5-2 win.

The Javelinas came into the match 6-5 and not even ranked inside of the top-50 and they were playing the newly minted No. 10 Eagles, but the way the match played out it sure didn't seem as if there were 40+ schools in between these two. It was a valiant effort from the visitors.

Ultimately, Biola earned the doubles point to start off right and got critical wins in just about all the tightly-contested singles matches to endure and get the win.

The doubles point was no gimme on Friday. With a win at No. 1 and loss at No. 2 everything came down to each team's no. 3 pairings. There was no room for error either as both sides were evenly split at six wins a piece through the first 12 games.

That set up a doubles point-deciding tiebreaker where Ines Diaz and Gaby Carvajal stepped up and answered the call for the Eagles. Even the tiebreaker was tight as it took a 7-5 score for Carvajal and Diaz to clinch the win.

Those who've watched Biola tennis all year long sure were not sweating, because with this win Carvajal and Diaz improved to 10-0 when playing together this year.

When the match moved into singles competition there were four matches decided in straight sets and a pair which required all three.

The difference in the contest turned out to be Biola's ability to dig deep and pull out the wins in both of those three-setters. Colbeyshae Emery (6-3; 6-1) and Lilly McNeill (6-1; 6-4) earned the two straight-set wins for the Eagles to put BU one win away from clinching the match.

But, the Javelinas picked up decisive wins of their own at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to ratchet up the pressure on Alexandria Mann and Brooke Fager at No. 3 and No. 5.

Mann showed tremendous resolve and the freshman was once again the one to clinch the match overall for Biola. She dropped her first set, and it was not particularly close at 6-2, and then won two-straight to lock things up.

Her second-set win set her on an explosive trajectory in the third set where she took a 5-0 advantage and eventually won 6-1.

Just about 15 minutes following Mann's win sealing the deal for BU, Fager earned a reward for a hard-fought match of her own by grabbing a 6-2 third set win to bounce back from a 6-3 set two loss.

It was the fifth three-set win of the season for Mann, who improves to 13-2 overall in singles play. For Fager, it's just her second three-set success. She's now 7-5 overall.

The win moves this BU team to an incredible 16-1 overall record. After a long week of competition David Goodman's side will have a bit of respite with their next match not coming until next Thursday when they host Metro State at 4:30 p.m.
