Glad to be Home

After a long stretch on the road, the Eagles returned to their home field on Friday and took game one over Hawaii Hilo.

LA MIRADA --- For the first time in nearly a month, the Biola Boys took Eagles Diamond on Friday afternoon. The return home was impressive for the Biola squad that collected a 6-3 win over the visiting Hawaii Hilo Vulcans to start the Friday doubleheader.

Beauvais starred on the mound for the Eagles, guiding the team through 7.2 innings. Seven scoreless frames dictated the pace of the game, making any run support good for a Biola lead.

The righty has only gotten better with each appearance this season. Friday was his fourth start of 2022 and Beauvais posted single-game bests this year in innings pitched and earned runs allowed, while collecting his first win.

The offensive help for the Eagles began in the third frame. Ball control got away from the UHH starter, putting two runners on by way of walks. With one out in the frame, BU notched back-to-back doubles to collect a trio of scores for a 3-0 lead. Oscar Serratos smacked the first one to open the scoring with one RBI, before Rylan Greenlee launched one of his own to left center for the next two RBI.

A two-out rally fostered the next run support in the very next inning. A patient Brenden Bell took advantage of a 3-1 count to spark the offense with two outs, lining the ball to left for a single. The top of the lineup came to the plate next in Tyler Baca and he did not mess around. The BU center fielder turned on the first pitch of the at bat and sent it over the right field fence for his first homer of the season..

Andrew Lujan and Bell kept things moving in the sixth with singles to the left side. Baca took a pitch to the back to earn a trip to first base, loading the bases for the Eagles. Ole reliable Bobby Brown added to his team-leading RBI count with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Biola a 6-0 advantage.

The Vulcans finally impacted the scoreboard in the top of the eight, thanks to a pair Biola errors. The fielding mishaps helped a leadoff single come around the bases and score. The inning continued with a four-pitch walk from Beauvais and a hit-by-pitch from reliever Carson Cody, addin a second run for the visitors.

UHH looked to respond for a comeback effort, still down 6-2 entering the ninth. A third run came in following a Vulcan double, bringing the tying run to the plate with UHH down three and two runners on base. Tyler Mead had his name called and he answered, shutting the door with a one out appearance to record the save.

Bell and Baca were dominant at the plate in game one, combining for five hits and a .714 batting average. Left fielder Bell notched a three-hit effort for a season-high, while also adding a second multi-hit performance in 2022.

Game two is underway at Eagles Diamond, as Biola looks for the sweep.
