Battle Tested

Both teams went through the wringer on Friday with game two holding six lead changes and five ties in a BU victory.

LA MIRADA --- Back and forth only begins to describe the masterpiece between Biola and Hawaii Hilo on Friday. Game two was a hard-fought battle with big hits, strong pitching and smart base running that resulted in a 8-7 victory for the hosting Biola Eagles.

Every lead deserved an answer back throughout the four hour contest. The largest lead was two for either team. The close competition saw six lead changes and five ties through the nine innings at Eagles Diamond.

The call and response began in the opening frame, as the two teams each tallied one run in the first. Tyler Baca created the opportunity with a single from the leadoff spot, followed by stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. Bobby Brown brought Baca home with a single right back up the middle.

Once again the Vulcans started off the scoring run in the third with two runs on four hits. A pair of walks opened things up in the bottom of the inning for BU, prepping the bases for Andrew Lujan. The first baseman erased the two-run deficit with a shot to the wall in right field, scoring Oscar Serratos and Evan Rowe. The huge hit bounced off the top of the wall and stayed in play for a triple from Lujan. Stein stepped up with two outs and doubled to left center to give Biola the lead at 4-3 by scoring Lujan from third.

A blank fourth turned into one run fifth and sixth frames for the visiting Vulcans. The two runs turned the tide again, as UHH nabbed the 5-4 lead.

The game evened out in the bottom of sixth with another Biola triple. This time it was Serratos with a two-out hit to the opposite field, scoring Brenden Bell for a 5-5 tie.

The scoring run for the Eagles continued in the bottom of the seventh. Rowe led off by way of a walk and quickly reached third by a failed pick off attempt and a fielder's interference. A wild pitch scored Rowe to return the lead to the Eagles. A sacrifice bunt and another UHH error brought home another run, as BU tacked on two runs in the seventh without logging a hit.

With only two innings left, the Eagles held their heads up high with a 7-5 lead. Hawaii Hilo was not done fighting, responding in the top of the eighth. Two runs came in for the visitors, as the top of lineup cashed in to knot the game at seven.

Serratos was consistently in the thick of it for the Eagles, leading off the bottom of the eighth with a single. The shortstop nabbed second to put the game-winning runner in scoring position and advanced to third on a groundout from Rylan Greenlee. A walk and flyout followed, putting the pressure on Tyler White to help the team break the tie with two outs. The junior was clutch with a solid hit through the right side, bringing home the eventual game-winner.

With an 8-7 lead, Tyler Mead still had a job to do. The BU closer needed to pull out the last three outs to secure the victory. Two quick outs started the ninth but the top of the order for the Vulcans came to the plate and gave it their best shot. Two hitters reached base to represent the potential game-tying and game-winning runs for the visitors. With the game hanging in balance, Mead shut the door with a big looping curveball that froze the No. 3 hitter from Hawaii Hilo. The strikeout ended the game and gave the win decision to Mead for his first in 2022.

Serratos was stellar in the game two narrow victory. Through five plate appearances, Serratos reached base four times and was unstoppable on the base path with five steals. A triple and single came in from the senior, who tallied two runs scored and one RBI.

Biola will continue its series against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
