Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

That was Big

The Eagles collected a big win against a tough Hawaii Hilo squad on Tuesday.

LA MIRADA --- It continues to be a grind for Biola Men's Tennis, as the team played its third-consecutive challenging match. Head Coach David Goodman's group answered the bell on Tuesday and emerged triumphant in a high-energy, back-and-forth battle with visiting Hawaii Hilo.

The Eagles managed a 5-2 victory, but the final score does not reflect quite how gritty of a match it actually was. The score was just a 3-2 Biola advantage as the match was in its final two singles battles, with both of those matches separated by just a game or two.

A break went Biola's way in the second-to-last match to finish as Antonio Rosales Varona was down in the third set at No. 3 singles but ended up winning the clinching point via the retirement of his opponent due to a minor leg injury.

Callen Hein stepped up though to ensure Biola's victory was also clinched the old-fashioned way. The first-year Eagle played out his third set all the way to the sweet finish, working a 7-5 win in the deciding frame. It was Hein's first three-set win this season.

Alexei Prokopchuk and Alex Sedeno each picked up straight-set wins to get the Eagles' other singles points. Both men were locked in with decisive 6-2 victories in their respective second sets.

Hawaii Hilo was not willing to roll over, despite coming into Tuesday's matchup with one loss already to Biola. The Eagles' 5-2 victory matches the final result from the initial matchup out in Hawaii. Curiously enough, it was the same two men earning singles wins for UHH as happened out in O'ahu.

Biola won the doubles point for the 12th time on Tuesday. It's been a source of strength all year long for the Eagles, who're 12-3 when it comes to doubles competition.

This doubles victory was keyed by a 7-5 win at the top flight and 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. The Eagles were down in the third pairing when the clinch shut doubles down.

The win pushes Biola to 11-4 overall this season. The Vulcans fall to 1-8. The Eagles' two wins against UHH this season are encouraging after an 0-8 start to the all-time series against Hilo.

Up next for Biola Men's Tennis is Wednesday's 3 p.m. home match against Washington University St. Louis (6-2).
