Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Not Our Day

Biola put up some good fight up and down the lineup, but can't get a win vs. No. 6 HPU.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Men's Tennis came up against the No. 6 team in the country, an undefeated Hawaii Pacific Sharks team, at the Biola Tennis Center Monday.

The Eagles came up short against an 8-0 Sharks team that seems primed for another deep postseason run after making it to the regional finals last year. HPU took the doubles point and won all six singles competitions to earn an 7-0 road victory over Head Coach David Goodman's bunch.

It's just the fourth time this season Biola's suffered a loss (10-4), and its just the second occasion where Biola Men's Tennis was held without a single victory. The other occurrence, a 4-0 road loss to HPU in early-February.

Despite the lopsided final scoreline, the Eagles represented well at spots up and down the lineup. To start, doubles play was competitive throughout, with the Eagles winning four games in each of their losses (no. 1 and no. 2 doubles).

Biola was also down just two games at No. 3 doubles with Callen Hein and Isaac Cordova battling, but the match was left unfinished at 5-3.

After transitioning to singles, Biola lost a pair of heartbreakers at the top-2 spots. Sebastian Herrera was playing No. 1 for the Eagles and pushed his opponent Jordi Walder, the No. 8 ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, to the brink.

Walder needed a tiebreaker to win each set of his straight-set victory. He beat Herrera 7-6, 7-6, with even the tiebreakers being too close to call at 8-6 and 9-7.

Similarly, Alexei Prokopchuk had his hands full at the No. 2 spot. He drew Jan Pleva, who came into the day 6-1 at No. 2 singles with his only loss being to the No. 2 man at No. 7 Washburn University.

Prokopchuk dropped his first set 6-3 but bounced back to force a third frame by winning 7-5 in the second set. Unfortunately for Prokopchuk that scoreline flipped in the third set and he lost the match with that decisive 7-5 effort by Pleva.

By the time those two battles came to a close, the match was already decided in favor of the guests, with 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles getting the action started and a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 4 singles spot clinching it for the Sharks.

Prokopchuk was not the only Eagle to force three sets on this day, though. Callen Hein would push his match into a super breaker by answering a 6-3 first set loss with a 6-3 second set win.

The loss dropped Biola to 10-4, but the Eagles will quickly get a chance to bounce back as they host once more on Tuesday. Biola looks to lodge its second win of the year over Hawaii Hilo (1-7) in a 4 p.m. match at the BTC.
