Defense Delivers

The BU defense took care of business in the second and fourth quarters on the way to a 56-47 comeback win.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Each quarter seemed to change with the tides on Saturday afternoon, as the Biola Eagles (13-6, 9-3 PacWest) and the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-9, 2-7 PacWest) traded blows. The second and fourth stanzas made the difference for BU, defeating FPU by a 56-47 final margin.

BU put on a defensive clinic in the second quarter. The Sunbirds could not handle the pressure and went scoreless for the entirety of the period. Nine field goal attempts all missed the mark for FPU, while turning the ball over eight times.

The impressive stand was necessary for BU after a rocky first stanza. A 24-12 deficit faced the Eagles, following the opening 10 minutes of action. Offensively, Biola managed to collect 11 points in the second period to go into halftime down one at 24-23. Seven points for the Eagles came off of FPU turnovers with Jordan Rabe leading the way with five points in the quarter.

The back-and-forth continued in the second half with the Sunbirds regaining the momentum after the break. An 18-14 third quarter extended the host squad's lead to five heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

The final turnaround came fast for BU. A 14-2 run in favor of Biola turned the tide and created a seven-point lead for the visitors at 51-44. The seven-minute stretch featured an FPU offense that went 1-9 from the field with four turnovers thanks to a stingy Eagles defense.

Sydney Moran sparked the rally with a three-pointer in the opening possession of the fourth. Amiah Simmons sustained the momentum on offense, tallying nine of the team's 14 points.

For nearly seven minutes of game action, FPU could not find a way to impact the scoreboard. The Eagles took control of the game in the waning minutes and eased into the 56-47 triumph.

Simmons carried the load offensively in the low-scoring affair. The freshman guard notched her eighth 20-point effort on the year with 20 on Saturday. She put in the work on the free throw line, sinking eight foul shots on the day.

Four Eagles attacked the boards and corralled at least six rebounds in the contest. Stephanie Lee led the way with seven boards and 10 points.

Aysia Johnson and Laila Walker had active hands on defense, nabbing 10 steals combined. The team as a whole logged 15 steals, while forcing 26 turnovers.

BU will continue its trip in Northern California on Monday with a bout against Holy Names at 5:30 pm.
