The Thinnest of Margins

Biola baseball felt the sting of a narrow defeat on Friday against a tough opponent in Cal State Monterey Bay.

SEASIDE, Calif. --- The 2022 campaign kicked off for the Eagles with their first countable action on Friday night. The Biola boys found themselves in a roller coaster contest on the road against Cal State Monterey Bay with the host squad sneaking ahead late for a 5-4 final score.

"Great to be back out on the field competing against high level teams like Cal State Monterey Bay," commented head coach Jeff Calhoon. "We had an opportunity to win late, but came up short."

That opportunity came, following a two-run seventh that gave BU the lead. The visitors were up 4-2 with just six outs remaining. In the bottom of the eighth, CSUMB found what they needed in a two-out two-RBI single to right-center field. A BU error kept the inning alive to see the eventual game-winning run touch home for the Otters.

The BU bats returned to the plate in the top of the ninth in one last attempt to close the one-run gap. The team could not get anything going and a three up three down frame secured the 5-4 final.

Both teams rallied to bring a run to the plate in just two of the nine innings on Friday. BU brought home two in the fourth and two in the seventh but the Otters found their edge with two in the fifth and three in the eighth.

Jake Anderson shined in the role of middle relief, taking the mound for three innings. The sophomore held CSUMB scoreless in his three innings of work, tallying three strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk.

Biola worked together to open the scoring on Friday. In the fourth frame, four-straight singles brought two Eagles home for a 2-0 advantage. Wyatt Duncan and Andrew Lujan logged the two RBIs, before the rally stalled.

Two quick outs to start the seventh made it seem unlikely for the BU offense to add to the scoring column in the inning. A hit by pitch and single kept the at bat alive for the Eagles with the game knotted at two. Oscar Serratos made a statement with a two-out two-RBI triple. The extra-base hit was the lone one of the game for BU.

Tyler Baca was successful at the plate on Friday, reaching base in four of five plate appearances. Two singles, two walks and a run scored defined the day for the junior.

"I look forward to seeing how we bounce back from a tough loss tonight with two tomorrow," added Calhoon. On Saturday, the two teams will clash again with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
