Early Lead Gets Away

Biola baseball opened up Saturday’s doubleheader with a 2-0 lead but slowed down to drop game one.

SEASIDE, Calif. --- Game two of the weekend series and game one of Saturday's doubleheader between Biola (0-2) and Cal State Monterey Bay (2-0) came down to sustained scoring. Following an eventful first inning, the hosting Otters were able to maintain the offensive pace and pull off the 10-2 victory.

The Saturday morning contest got off to a fast start. The Eagles were on the attack early, tacking on two runs in the top of the first.

BU shortstop Bobby Brown got things going from the No. 2  spot in the lineup with a single to right-center field. With the green light on a 2-0 count, Oscar Serratos unleashed on the ball and towered a home run to put two runs on the board for BU.

Brown tallied his first collegiate hit in the opening frame. The true freshman was a bright spot in the lineup, offering two hits in four at bats in game one on Saturday.

The 2-0 Biola lead did not last very long. CSUMB responded in the bottom of the first with three scores of their own.

Solid pitching returned in the following innings with neither team recording a hit in the second and third innings. Gilbert Lopez found his groove striking out three between the two frames.

The Otter lead began to grow in the bottom of the fourth with big hits from the host squad. Two doubles captured the momentum for CSUMB, as they secured a 5-2 lead after the fourth.

Runs continued to trickle in for the host squad in the fifth and sixth, giving the Otters a sizable 10-2 advantage.

The BU bats put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings but could not come up with the hit to cut down on the deficit. Wyatt Duncan did his part with a two-out double in the sixth to put runners on second and third but the team came up empty.

Game two of the doubleheader is set to start at approximately 2:15 pm.
