Close One Gets Away

The Eagles dropped game one on Sunday to Holy Names by a narrow 4-3 margin.

OAKLAND, CA --- A slower pace from the BU offense allowed for the Holy Names Hawks (8-8, 1-2 PacWest) to sneak away with game one of Sunday's doubleheader. HNU needed just four runs to nab the 4-3 victory over the visiting Eagles (5-6, 2-1 PacWest).

The four-game series between the two PacWest squads began on Saturday. The Eagles offense tallied 28 runs between the two games to sweep the day.

The Holy Names pitching staff responded on day two, holding Biola to four hits and three runs. Two hurlers carried the load for HNU, dealing the nine innings with seven combined strikeouts.

The highlight of the contest for the Biola lineup was a two-run fourth that gave BU the lead. Entering the frame, BU was down by one with the top of the lineup due up to the plate. Back-to-back outs preceded back-to-back homers for the Eagles. Oscar Serratos launched the first long ball, sending the ball over the left-center fence and was followed by Wyatt Duncan, who crushed the ball over the fence in center.

The power hitting continued in the bottom of the fourth, as HNU added a home run of their own to tie the game at 2-2.

In the top of the fifth, BU took advantage of HNU miscues to retake the lead. Two hit by pitches and a passed ball helped place runners on second and third without the Eagles needing to put the bat on the ball. Bobby Brown recorded the RBI for BU with a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 3-2 edge.

Seventh inning success looked like it would continue for a BU squad that plated 15 runners in the two Saturday games against the Hawks in the seventh frame. Brenden Bell led off with a double down the left field line and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A pair of strikeouts took a blow to the BU momentum. A groundout ended the threat, as the Eagles left the frame scoreless despite having a runner on third with no one out.

The blown opportunity would come back to bite the visiting Eagles. In the next half inning, Holy Names tacked on two runs to capture a 4-3 lead. The two scores came in, despite Holy Names not logging a hit in the inning.

The final two innings went by quietly with neither team impacting the scoreboard. The Eagles were able to place a runner in scoring position in the eighth and ninth frames but could not come up with the crucial hit to score the necessary run.

Keith Walker drew the start for BU, tossing six innings and notching seven strikeouts. Matthew Watson and Nick Merkin each logged an inning in relief, combining to allow three walks but no hits.

The Eagles and Hawks are currently concluding their four-game series with game two this afternoon.
