A Sour Ending

The Eagles played close to the Hawks once again but fell by one run for the second-straight game.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Sunday evening saw the conclusion of a four-game series between the Biola Eagles (5-7, 2-2 PacWest) and the Holy Names Hawks (9-8, 2-2 PacWest). The two teams split the series with a doubleheader sweep for the hosting Hawks on Sunday.

Game two finished in a similar fashion to game one on Sunday with the Eagles trailing by one run. HNU took game two by a final score of 5-4 through the seven inning affair.

The first rally came from the host squad in the second inning. An error opened things up for HNU, putting the leadoff batter on base. Three-straight hits with two outs stunned the Eagles, bringing in four runs to start the scoring.

Biola offered up two hits and two walks through the first three innings but finally broke the scoring barrier in the fourth. Rylan Greenlee led off the frame with a solo shot on a 1-1 count. The long ball was the first of the season for the first baseman, who cut the BU deficit to three.

The inning was not over for the Eagles even though they were unable to tally another hit. An error and two walks loaded the bases, following Greelee's homer. A groundout from Matthew Nyce nabbed a run batted in, as Evan Rowe touched home plate.

A 4-2 ballgame turned into a 5-2 ballgame in the bottom of the fourth with another two-out RBI for HNU. A walk and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second base to start the inning for the host squad. The speedster stole third to place himself in prime position to add to the lead. A single to left field scored the runner, which unbeknownst to them was ultimately the winning run.

Biola did its best to complete the comeback, adding to its run total in the fifth and sixth frames. A single from Andrew Lujan plated one in the fifth and Tyler Baca saw to another score in the sixth with a single of his own. The sixth showed much more promise following the RBI single from Baca, as the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately, BU was unable to capitalize with back-to-back strikeouts.

Still down, 5-4, entering the final inning the Eagles needed one more run on the board to keep the game alive. Bobby Brown led off the seventh with a single, before being moved to second with a sacrifice bunt. The runner in scoring position saw no more movement with the second and third outs coming with the next two batters.

Brown, Greenlee and Baca sparked the BU offense with each player logging multiple hits. The trio accounted for six of the team's eight hits in the contest.

Connor Butler was fantastic in relief for the Eagles, toeing the rubber for 2.1 innings. The southpaw forced five whiffs and refused to allow a hit or run.

Biola will return to action on Friday and Saturday with a four-game series against Academy of Art.
