The Big Three

Biola jumped out to an early lead and held onto it throughout the game against Cal Poly Pomona for a 12-4 win.

POMONA, Calif. --- It was an all-around team victory for the Biola Boys as a group. The bats came alive, pitching limited hits, and the defense stayed strong at Scolinos Field on Tuesday evening for a non-conference game, winning convincingly, 12-4.

After a tough doubleheader split on Saturday against Cal State LA, Biola changed a few things around to come in hot as a squad collecting a total of 17 hits on Tuesday. Oscar Serratos had a cosmic day with 4 hits out of five at bats, while picking up one homerun, a double, and three RBIs.

"I am proud of this group. I enjoyed seeing them come together with tight defense, good pitching, and clutch hitting. It was great to get a glimpse and watch some of the younger guys get their opportunity, while also a few of them having their debut tonight," mentioned Head Coach Jeff Calhoon

The Eagles got to it early as Wyatt Duncan singled to left field to score speed racer Tyler Baca to get a lead in the top of the first inning. Duncan was a clutch hitter all day for his team, as he also had two hits, four RBI's, and one homer. Biola started Andrew Zittel, who pitched two innings, facing six batters and only allowed one earned run off of one hit and two walks. Out of the bullpen Tristan Cazel, Jeff Woolson, Connor Butler, Matthew Watson, Caleb Bennett, Carson Cody, and Nick Merkin all came together to manufacture outs for BU to help lead their team to a win.

Five Eagles including, Baca, Serratos, Evan Rowe, Matthew Nyce and Rhett Stein, all generated a double on the evening, adding to the 11 RBIs.
The visiting team only mustered one run through the first six innings, thanks to the strong pitching from BU.

A little hiccup in the bottom of the seventh brought a small setback for BU. A three run frame cut down on the BU lead for a short time.

The hitting machines of Biola responded in the top of the eighth, as Serratos doubled down the right field line to get the inning started. Brenden Bell stepped up and singled up the middle, scoring Serratos. Brandon Thomas took advantage of his opportunity and singled to right field, sending Bell to second. Tyler White reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in Bell to cap off the two-run rally.

Merkin came in and closed things out for the BU squad, as he finished the game with a one, two, three inning.

With a fantastic win, Biola heads into conference play, starting in Oakland on February 26, at 2 p.m. against Holy Names. For live stats links and updates check athletics.biola.edu.
